      Spare key?

      Greetings everyone.

I just purchased a used 2010 Aveo 5 Hatchback manual transmission nearly 3 weeks ago. It came with two keys with the remote lock / unlock transmitter. I would like to get a simple spare key to keep in my wallet "just in case". I did this for my previous vehicle, 95 Jeep Wrangler, a couple of times coming in very handy.

In all the web searching I've done, I've come up with key blank part numbers (Ilco p/n x174, TR40, DW04RAP), but the answer to the question of if I need a chipped or non-chipped key is allusive.

So how do I tell if a non-chipped key will work in my ignition?

      TIA
      Jack

all new cars have some type of theft deterrent system.gm being no different any key would have to be the proper blank and programmed which can only be done by the dealer.usual cost of programming is about 60.00.this is just a universal response so i guess there is a very small chance im wrong with the aveo but i doubt it.a quick phone call to your local dealer will give u the correct answer.dosnt really matter where you buy blank(ebay).i heard that some locksmiths can order and cut some keys but then you still need programming.you can get any key cut cheaply just for unlocking the door.

Easy, you pay $2 for the key and then try to start your car.

if you need a chipped key but you want it to "work" always. you make two, and then put the original "chipped" inside the clam shell of the steering column close enough to the ignition so it senses it.

      Resolved!

Actually $2.29 at the local ACE Hardware. Plain key works on door and ignition just fine without a chip. I had two made, one stays in my wallet, the other in a key box where I keep spares and/or originals.

      FYI, the blanks are:
HyKo Products Co., Northfield, OH 44067
      MZ19

      On the receipt:
      029069705923
      51923
      KEY MAZDA MZ19

From what I gather from reading other posts, this may or may not work in every Aveo.
