Hello, I have a 2004 aveo with 168,000 miles. Only things I had to fix was the brake light switch and the passenger Side wheel bearing at 161k.

Wow rockin 168K! I'm hoping to eventually hit 200K and see where I go from there! I just clocked 113K and still rolling. Time for another set of brakes! Third set of tires still in great shape though. Oil changed every 3K. I'd really love to see where the members mileage is and who hits 200K before me. Is it possible? Can we make it? I'd like to keep this post running to see where our mileage goes. Ok you members, log in your mileage here as you make progress!

Is your odometer running backwards? you hit 114k in March....

Yeah sorry I misquoted my mileage. Still not done with 114K yet. I've been spending some time in the 85 Mercedes diesel. Big old S class Benz with a turbo diesel motor. 282K and running great!

Ok all, now I've officially hit 114K. Now at 114479 and I have some issues to deal with. Left side wheel bearing and right side lower ball joint have gone bad. Gonna take a crack at fixing it myself since I just got a quote of $650.00 from the local tire shop. Stealership wanted $800.00. Also just redid front brakes, which makes the 3rd set I'm on now.

Both of those are "easy" just depends on if the wheel bearing is pressed or not of it's an easy diy for the average person. But even so you can get the bearings pressed for like $20-50 at a shop if you have a second car to drive the spindle there.

I'll be ok in that department. like you I have a few cars laying around.

Ok, so to make note of my last issue regarding my front left wheel bearing and right side lower ball joint problem I finally resolved those issues. In reality I parked the car in the garage up on jack stands for quite a while and just drove the Mercedes diesel. I figured 25mpg wasnt so bad, and the car was a lot larger. Anyway, last week I decided enough was enough. Time to get the car back on the road. While it was in the garage I did the brakes all the way around, with new rotors. Changed the oil also, then did the ball joint that needed to be done. I woosed out on the wheel bearing and just let my local shop do both left and right sides. Right side didnt need it but I figured at 114K I might as well get it done too. As easy as it is, I didnt feel like unbolting the steering knuckles to do them. Maybe a bad choice on my part because when I went to pay the bill with parts and labor, and also a NYS Inspection it with tax was $727.44. Parts total were like $271.00 and labor was like $430.00. Now right about this moment I'm sure some of you just experienced the sound of skidding tires, and breaking glass, followed by a huge crash sound inside your skulls, followed by WTF??!!,and HOLY SH#T! I know I couldve done it a lot cheaper by doing the work myself and having the bearings and hub pressed in by my local parts shop. Petrified Rabbit was even kind enough to send me photos of said steering knuckles with bearings inside. In retrospect since I had the car since 2004 when it was new, and its now 2010 and it cost me relatively nothing just tires, brakes, plugs air filters, wires, and oil changes which I have done myself, I really havent put any money into the car. I feel like I'm still ahead. It also has never been back to the dealership for any problems either!

i will openly admit, if your not comfortable doing something, paying for it is ok..

i sometimes take my car to a mechanic when is -10* outside and i don't feel like being cold. But it really depends on if it is something i want to trust a mechanic to do.

My sister in law on the other hand had no money and i had to fix her car a few winters ago in subzero weather. it was a cavalier and the timing chain tensioner went. My wife brought me out hot chocolate and it froze before i could take a drink.. literally boiling hot to frozen in like 2 minutes.
