Get a VW Golf or Jetta. You can pick up a 2000-2003 MK4 Bora body for less than your budget and under 100K miles. They have unlimited aftermarket following as well and they are really sporty cars. Very fun to drive. There's a guy here in town selling an 03' Jetta Wolfsburg Edition 1.8T for $4999US. It has 124K on the clock though, but a VW will run forever.

Nice body style, but I would stay away.

Consensus of a BMW. If you can't afford it new, you can't afford it used.

Nice car, but I would avoid it unless you want to invest in maintenance.

+1, BMW parts are expensive and they are a pain in the ass to work on. A lot of German cars are hard to work on, I can honestly say though most VW's are pretty simple machines. Ask NYchevoo, he's had his own problems with his Mercedes.
