Can't get the timing belt back ON

Postby dpawl31 » Sat Apr 24, 2010 8:22 pm

I dont have the 'special tool'

I got the belt off by loosening a few things, water pump/idler/tensioner.

I can't figure out the tensioner, how to loosen the tension to put on the belt.

My car is sitting as a pile of !@#%$ right now.

The DIY on blogspot stops RIGHT where I need the help, and all the other aveo DIY timing belts sites are extremely vague.

I'm screwed.

People on daewootech saying they are using thin vice grips... what Im not seeing is how the hell you get them in there, like on the water pump........

can you post a picture?

generally there is a way to take tension away from the tensioner to put the belt on and reapply tension.

sounds like thin vise grips allow to either turn it, or go into slots to squeeze it together.

$115 tool to turn the water pump.

No !_(#%U&ing idea WHY OR HOW the WATER PUMP adjusts the TENSIONER?!

Not to mention, the backside of the timing belt cover is in the way, I dont see any way to get a tool in there, or what to put it on, nevermind vice grips.

Doing the belt because I cant wait anymore, and to top it all of my grandfather passed this morning.

FML. Seriously.

hey bro, you have to remove that rear cover and turn the water pump, it turns counter clockwise to tighten, i did this myself with some pliers, you dont need to order that fancy tool

Got it done and finished for $100 @ a shop.

No where in any instructions did I see I had to remove the rear cover, OR how.

Any input on this?

I need to know, because once I figure out HOW to get to the water pump, I'll be ordering a tensioner, idler and water pump to put in in a few months.
