DIY Cold Air Intake

Postby LarsBud » Wed Jan 13, 2010 12:58 pm

Found this on the net and I think it's really cool. It shows you how to build your own cold air intake. I think I'm going to give this a try myself.

Or you could just do what I did for my first CAI and hit up an exhaust shop for a pipe and bracket, costs me $20 plus a filter

That's basically what I did, I made my CAI from lowes, then insulated it so you couldn't tell I used pvc pipe. Eventually I will be getting stainless steel pipe and doing everything nicely though.

I had a conversation about this exact subject with maintenance man of 35 years, and a buddy that‘s a mechanic. They both recommended using PVC, over ABS. ABS plastic is all synthetic, PVC has some (very, very little) natural rubber in its composition. With prolonged heat exposure to heat, the ABS will leach fumes into the intake, and can mess with some of the sensors….. I dunno if it’s right, but , they made it sound as if the knew what they were talking about.

thats true to an extent. ABS has come a long way in the past 20 years. It is used in engine compartments now oem.

all you need is some mandrel pipe. i made my intake out of a honda accord intake and its was a total of like $32 shipped.

that includes the filter, silicone couplers, and clamps. only needed two cuts to make it fit really nice.

you'll spend close to that or more buying a filter, clamps, and couplers.
