Auto Tranny shifting

Postby thehunterooo » Wed Jan 20, 2010 9:15 pm

On the auto, it allows you to stay in 1st gear, and also to only use 1st and 2nd gear, does the auto have a rev limiter?

On an autocross track, the 1-2 gears would be super good I owuld think, if you stay under 60mph

this is dependent of driving style. but using the shifter as a slap stick when the tranny is not built for it can do damage.

the newer shiftable trannies are build slightly different to allow for that.

Are you talking about the Semi-stick gear box?

not entirely. but since the mid 90's car have had a selection position usually marked with a + - . The means the way the automatic shifts, or more correctly holds a gear, is made for selecting gears at speed.

Some old designs actually stop transmission fluid flow to the other gears (typically over drive) to prevent that gear from activating. If you were to go into that gear moving at 60mph, your going to slap the gear together without proper amount of fluid. occasionally it might not be noticed. but often enough you will burn up the clutches in the transmission.

Not that i know what design the aveo is.

I have used the HOLD feature that allows you to lock it in a gear. In first, I can hit about 40 MPH when the RPMs hit 6000. Yes, the car has a limiter. If you keep it floored at 6000 RPMs it will cut power and return over and over until you let off or shift.

What I have found is you can hit:

40 MPH in 1st Gear
70 MPH in 2nd Gear
about 85 to 90 MPH in 3rd Gear
and your top out speed in 4th Gear (I topped mine out at about 110 MPH)

This is on a 2004 Automatic with the standard 1.6L L4 engine.

my hold button is weird, it does not hold a gear, but makes the car seem like it has no gears, like the cvt nissan crap, i hate it :P maybe something is wrong with my hold button...

the hold button should hold a gear up to a certain rpm, but will nonetheless shift to the next gear if the rpms are too high.

Nope, the HOLD button will do just that...HOLD it in gear...at least thats what it does on mine.

Say you have it in 1st with HOLD and you redline it....it will stay there (bouncing back and forth because of the rev limiter) until YOU shift it. If you release the gas, it will slow the car down a great deal (like you let go of the gas without pressing the clutch in a standard.)

You might have something wrong with it....
