Automatic woes

Postby shibbs » Tue Jan 25, 2011 6:21 pm

So, to anyone else here with an auto...

Can you go up tiny hills at 75mph without it downshifting?? I can't. If the RPMs are below 3000 (approx 72-73) it can just fine and will lug up all but the really good inclines. Above that (75) it will downshift to 3rd and rev up to 4700 and just stay there, even after the road levels out. I then have to tap the HOLD button and then tap it again (engage and disengage it) and it will go back into 4th.
It drives me INSANE.

Oh, and while doing this, the mileage obviously goes to the shitter. Latest observed highway mileage is 22.4. Yes, TWENTY TWO MILES PER GALLON.

Anyone heard of any fix to this??? I brought it to the dealer today and they said "NORMAL OPERATION."

Is there a way I can wire in a solenoid to lock my trans into 4th gear? Can I change the fluid out for something different? (Dex4 in it now)

Car is a 09 Aveo LT.

you should expect a mpg loss in winter, not sure all the way down to 22 mpg, but i think like 20% losses?

is that strictly highway? i'm getting around 22 in the city. i think. i filled up today and with @ 2/3 highway i got 28.6 mpg.

my recommendation for you is to buy a manual. i drive at 4700 rpm all the time, i honestly agree you need that rpm to have the power uphill, so either gas it earlier to get to 4700 in 4th gear, or let it downshift.

I just find it really hard to believe that an engine with such a linear torque curve needs to run over 4500 to climb a little hill!

Eh.

That's what I get for buying a cheap car.
