New G3 with terrible fuel mileage!

Postby sidney » Sun Sep 20, 2009 7:37 pm

Help

I have a new G3 with 900 miles. At best, with sedate driving but with A/C on, it barely makes 19 mpg.

I'll change oil to Mobil 1 soon but I don't think it will decrease fuel consumption to 25 - 27 mpg.

Any ideas?

Regards from Birmingham AL

the engine is still breaking in, so itll be like that for the first few thousand miles or so

also you cant floor it like i do,i get 22mpg or so and my aveo runs over 3500rpm most of the time, drving normally i could get 30plus easily, but i have no fun :(

if you want the best milage, driving habits like mine will kill it, but sythetic oil, new spark plugs and fuel saving tires will help out some

I shift in between 3 and 4k and always get 30mpg.

Not to insult your intelligence, but how do you calculate your mileage numbers?

If you drive to empty (you'll be putting just about 10 gallons back in the tank...you should have elapsed 300 to 320 miles.

Your only going 190 miles?

i usally put 10 gallons or so in my tank, and get 220 to 230 a tank, but like i said, my aveo shifts up at 6000 or more most of the time

i dont think i stressed the point that i drive my aveo hard, all of the time, again my aveo never drops below 3500 unless i stop

but if i drive it easily and keep it under 2800 or so, my milage is a lot better

i was thinking it was the A/C, the low miles and the rpms.

Hunter have you notice a difference with the A/C on or off?

With the hp loss from the A/C running, which is 15-20% on a 1.6l, to keep the car driving like you would without the a/c on would require more pedal, drive by wire might do it automatically though? but the added rpms and feeling the same acceleration would make you think you are not pushing it, when the rpms are actually higher..?

the slightly higher rpms, the a/c running, and low mileage would all nibble away at the 30 mpg he should be getting.

Also does the car sit and idle at all? run to cool it off, or idle while doing anything? that would contribute, i know last winter warming the car up for 10 minutes twice a day i seemed to lose 20 miles out of a tank of gas, same would go for idling with the a/c on, but there would be more draw so more fuel used.

i always drive with my a/c off (unless its about 95plus)

my pedal normally is on the floor so my milage is usally low

my mpg has been the lowest at 18 per gallon one fillup, and i have driven regualrly to get 31 mpg

though im always 80-100 on the highway and i still get good milage (4200rpm crusing at 100mph i seen yesterday)

Maybe downhill, no way you're at 4200rpms at 100mph cruising the highway.

Hey Y'all

Thanks for the replies. Birmingham is a large city with several freeways and parkways so driving 'in town' does not mean stop and go. The 3.9 liter, 3600 lb car I traded in on the G3 did 23 mpg, my 3 liter minivan does about the same. My 1.3 liter Alfa does close to 30 mpg and my foot is on the floor all the time!

I don't run the tank down but I simply divide the miles by the gallons used when I top it off. I've used a GPS to verify that the odometer is correct and the tires are properly inflated.

19 mpg in a fuel injected twin cam car can't be right.
