i was running 4975 watts clamped power a year ago from an atomic AT5000.1D with NO fusing on the 5 runs of 0/1 power wire. Subs wired to .25 ohm nominal, .8 ohm after rise.

if you would like to go look at my build thread, youll see that i clamped my power. My starting impedance is 1 ohm. Yet when you calculate the impedance clamped you will find its ~3 ohm. Can you explain this? Its called impedance rise. You will also note that its ~5200 watts.

I've been following this thread for awhile now, and I think there's one main disagreement here.
You can run a huge amount of wattage off of just a battery and caps, but only for very short periods (ie spl competitions) but if you intend on running it for a half hour or so while you are driving you are going to need a larger alternator to keep your power up.

how many of you have actually done an install of this size before?

I haven't run that large, I am fairly impressed. The last big stereo I worked with was fused at a total of 150 amps and ran off 2 batteries and 2 caps. It was running 4 10's in a bandpass box in the bed of an s-10 ported through into the cab. After burning out the oem alternator it was replaced with a 200amp one.

The system being built isnt for competition burps, I just want something LOUD for my commute to work everyday. So, looks like the downsizing of what I had planned originally isnt a bad idea, since a 300 or greater amp alternator is out of the question under these hoods
