impact gun

i'm looking at buying one to tackle most automobile related tasks.
so far i'm torn between two that i found at sears which are the best deal i have found so far.

they are both craftsmen brand and come with two batteries
one is 149.99 and is a hexagonal driver doing 125 ft/lbs
the other is 169.99 and is a 1/2" driver doing 200 ft/lbs

i'm leaning towards the 125 ft/lb model because i don't want to buy the adapters to make the 1/2" driver fit the 1/4" sockets that i have, but i don't know if 125 ft/lbs is a good amount to handle most jobs.

so 125 vs 200 or should i be looking for one that puts out more torque??

Neither of those will do wheel lugs.

I use a snap on air powered 1/2 impact. But I bought a cheap ass corded 1/2 impact so I don't always have to turn on the air compressor. I have been quite pleased with it. And for the $40 I paid, you can buy a few sets of sockets to get whatever sizes you need.

You talk about 1/4 stuff though so it depends on what you are rearing apart. If you are using it for body tear down and not mechanical as much. Buy a true 3/8 battery impact, I think makita and Bosch make them. It will gave more umph than the smaller one your looking at but ve able to have sockets for smaller headed bolts as well

If it's just something you will use occasionally I would tell you to look at HarborFreight.com. They're rediculously cheap, but if it's something you will need to use every day I would look at Snap-on, Mac or Matco.

I don't mind it not being enough for the wheels just something to use occasionally that will have enough to get most jobs done is all. Ya I would have went to harborfreight to look but we don't have one here in flagstaff. I'll check online though. I don't think I'll be doing much body work. Mostly mechanical like regular maintenance

Yeah, for $100 on HarborFreight you could get a decent pneumatic 1/2" impact gun w/ at least 600ft/lbs of torque with an adapter set for different size sockets. I have one at my shop that works pretty good, but my girlfriend got me a really nice Snap-on one so I use that.

dang that does sound like a nice deal. i'm going to keep looking though.

I'm going to be doing my timing belt soon and i just don't want that crankshaft pulley to give me too much of a hassle

Some people like porter cable, some people hate 'em. Personally I've been happy with their stuff....no experience with that particular compressor though.

You can probably get high quality even cheaper used on craigslist.

why would you want to use an impact gun on a 1/4" socket, bolts that use a 1/4" socket are usually small, so they don't have that much torque
