Rally X
Been a long time. I'm sure some of you remember me...
Just wanted to check back in and say that'll I'll be putting my 04 SVM into a Rally X this weekend. Don't think I'll be able to grab any pics but I'll let everyone know how it went.
Been getting back into the aveo as far as fun stuff goes, since I just bought an '03 Jetta GLI as a daily, so that leaves my '04 open for fun stuff... we'll see how this Rally X Goes and see what's next.

Re: Rally X
Well,
The Rally X got rained out. Drove 2 hours up to Summit Point and it was just mud. No way we could run, and it was supposed to keep raining the rest of the day.
I was able to make it up Saturday for the School/Test'n'Tune. That went pretty well, We had some small stations set up (slalom, loose corners, etc). Got about 10 runs in on the Rally X stage as well.
The Aveo handles surprisingly well mannered in the clay dirt up there, but absolutely no traction. Also had an issue where it would pop out of second gear in a particularly bumpy section, completely annoying. I need to figure out what's causing that, or just jam it into first through that section.
The surface is ... well it changes from foot to foot. In parts you have you're regular VA clay, next you have extremely hard packed clay (to the point where you can put rubber down and squeal the tires!). On the outsides of the corners it's almost like sand. Very hard to get any traction.
There wasn't anyone out taking pics yesterday, but there's another next month and we'll see how that goes.
Also did a ride along in an M4 STi... and went off...that was fun! Those things are insanely fast.
Edit: For anyone interested. I'm running the PF (Prepared Front Drive) class. SRI and Slotted rotors. Otherwise the car is stock. Running Dunlop SP60 185/65R14 tires.
The tires work really well in gravel, and OK in dirt (for an all-season tire). Only things I plan on changing are maybe trying to find some progressive rate bump stops, change out the shocks/struts for the KYB's, and maybe find some cheap 15" wheels to throw blizzaks or some used rally tires on.

Re: Rally X
sounds like you had a good time, too bad the first event got rained out though
-
Re: Rally X
STI is fast? Yes. Think how i feel going from a 2007 WRX with literally over 3 times the HP and over 4 times the TQ than I have right now in my Aveo!
ahahaha
I'll just say "planning" to pass someone isn't something I'm used to!!

Re: Rally X
I know how you feel. I have another Aveo, and a '03 24v vr6 Jetta GLI. I get into the aveo and it's :( until I hit gravel.
The Rallycross has been rescheduled for this Sunday, though! If anyone is in the DC/VA/MD area, you should come check it out.

Re: Rally X
i used to drive an r32 daily.. i like the aveo though, its like going back to a mk1 rabbit gti..
just as much fun to drive, but pushing your cars limits sort of keeps you within the limits of the law

Re: Rally X
Rally X went well. No traction and no power to get through corners, but had a blast none the less. Attached are a 2 short videos that one of the course workers took.
Had the issue with second gear popping out through a particularly rough section again when they reversed the course... really need to figure out what's causing that. Also, with all the left foot braking, it felt like the booster would cut off about half-way through the run if I was hard on the throttle at the same time... really irritating, I would have to let off the throttle to get the pedal back, or just stand on the brake to get anything out of it.
Didn't catch the afternoon results, but I know I wasn't last, because one guy DNFed  In the morning I was running consistently 10seconds behind the 4wd guys, with at least 75 more HP, and snow tires. First in class, though... because I was the only one running in my class!

Re: Rally X
i would suggest checking the dog bone mount, if your engine is rocking, it will pop of of gears, specifically 2nd and 4th, because those are "push" selections in the linkage, so the engine rocking forward would through you back to neutral. not sure thats it though, could just be worn linkage. or something more serious (which i'm sure you thought of).
-
Re: Rally X
I was thinking the torque mount, myself. I don't think it's anything serious, because I would think it would happen in normal driving as well then. No death whine from the transmission, either.
It's just really annoying, because there's no good way to diagnose it, since I can't exactly take a peak down there when it's happening :)
What are my options with the dog bone? I know I saw someone on here with a poly bushing for it, and subachad who just made one out of window weld...
Would filling the other mounts help any at all? I just don't want to make it so stiff that it breaks stuff instead of just popping out of gear.
-
Re: Rally X
the hardness of the window weld wouldnt be hard enough to break anything, although in a rally setting, conditions are extreme.
you could put the car up in the air in second gear, and rock the ending (pry a little if comfortable) and see if it moves enough for the gear to change. it will happen differently if without load on the gear though.
i'm not sure about the availability of the poly one, only because he hasn't posted to see interest, just that he has one.

Re: Rally X
Attached the results.
2nd to last, due to a DNS/DNF!
Was about 1 minute behind the guy in front of me... but if you look I did post a run faster than an STi haha!
Times were going in the right direction, though... I just need to work on being a little more consistent, and I think the car could actually be competitive. I'm hoping that next month the guy who drives the golf in PF will be there so I actually have a good benchmark.
Closest thing to my class was a race-ready Focus SVT... and a rally prepped FWD Impreza (DNSed the PM, but look at his AM times 8-[ ).
Next event is 10/17 at Summit Point Raceway in WV!

Re: Rally X

Back! Sorry I haven't posted, been busy since I got back and rather sick, think I inhaled too much dust at the event, need to remember a dust mask for next time!
The even went well. There was a new organizer this time, so there were so growing pains as he figured everything out.
The event started about an hour late and we only got a total of 10 runs. The morning went POORLY for me. The course was extremely tight, and there were more cones than an autoX course! Missed gates on 4 of the 5 morning runs, which meant 4 bogey times (slowest in group + 10 seconds), on top of the ridiculous amount of cones I obliterated :), which basically killed any chance I had of being competitive.
Learned some valuable lessons from the morning session:
1. I get there early, stop dicking around and walk the course
2. Pay attention during the parade lap, put at least 100ft between me and the guy in front of me.
3. Do go balls out on the first run, slow it down and pay attention.
4. If you've already missed a gate, DON'T WORRY IF YOU'RE GOING TO MISS ANOTHER. If you haven't... HIT THE CONE.
The afternoon went much better. The organizer opened up the course and I was actually able to get up some speed, so that I could actually rotate the car. The course was a blast. Felt much faster, but I haven't seen the stage by stage times yet, just overall (of which I was last, if you don't count the cars that didn't finish... it's rally, and if you're counting cumulative time, THEY COUNT! :) ).
Still having issues with the car popping out of second gear, but that's just how it goes I guess. Really don't have the time to pull out the pitch mount and try to fill it or anything, so I'll just deal. I have a good idea of when it'll happen and have been able to quickly shove it back in.
Here's a side cam video from a Mk2 Golf GT in the afternoon:

Some Photos, still trying to get him to upload the full set, because the aveo gets no love in these! :)

Finally got the stage times. Was faster than an Outback sport in all but one of the afternoon runs :). He has a completely wrong time in the morning (89s, vs the fastest guys running mid-high 120s). If that were corrected, it would've been within 5 seconds either way. Was also keeping up with a GTI and a WRX pretty well.
Thinking my issue is the way I attack corners, or rather the way I don't. I tend to come in hot, use some LFB to get the car to rotate, but I'm not accelerating through the corner, but after I clear it. I'm going to concentrate on my attack more this event. Set up for the corner way in advance, then power (or rather, claw) my way through it. I keep hearing the saying: In like a lamb, out like a lion... the aveo may be more like a tabby house cat, though... Will try smooth and then "balls out"... see which works out. With the lack of power, I'm thinking keeping as much momentum as possible will be the way to go. I know I can dive a lot deeper into the corner than I am... just need to get my brakes in order before I feel comfortable. Maybe next season!
In either case, next event is coming up!
When: Sunday Nov 4th
Where: Summit Point Raceway, Summit Pt WV. Reg closes 8:30.

I'll also be up at NJMP for the RallyCar rally cross event this weekend.

I found the results: http://wdcr-scca.org/LinkClick.aspx?...id=93&mid=1177 I guess I am a little slow on this, is more points good? Or, bad?

That's from sept. Higher stage times = bad, otherwise I would've Won :)
Attached are Oct.'s results.

The event this weekend went pretty well. I had a friend riding along with me, so the trip up wasn't as boring!
There were 46 entries, so we only got 7 runs, but overall the day went pretty smooth. Was pretty quick in the morning, but the water truck went through right before we ran in the afternoon and that made things pretty slippery.
Finished 31st overall out of 46 who entered, and 42 who finished. 2nd in class, out of two. I was 11 seconds behind the other person (mk2 GTi), after penalties, 5 seconds off in raw time. Not a bad day.
I lost probably 5-10 seconds plowing straight into a corner on some super slick mud and coming to a complete stop... and probably 5 seconds over the course of the day, thanks to the car popping out of second gear. I'm going to try to address that issue over the winter break.
The rear shoes are also completely shot, leaving me with a lack of pedal feel, and in result a lack of confidence in the brakes. I'll change the shoes and have the drums resurfaced. Was going 55-60mph on the back straight which ends in a sweeping left hander, I'm confident I could've braked much later, if I had any confidence in the brakes :) .
Have until March to get the car back into shape... not sure what I can do to get my rally fix until then!

Ended up taking our '07 out this past weekend: Here's the aftermath. I'll try to get my onboard up later this week.

Had a terrible morning. It was a little sloppy (buttery is a better way to describe the surface when wet), and I haven't driven since April. Kept trying to drive it like a rear drive... feathering the throttle trying to turn... rather than just mashing the gas and clawing my way through... learned my lesson towards the end of the day, and ended up with some OK times. I really need to pick up a spare set of wheels and some snow or rally tires, though.
