2005 Aveo 5-spd sedan - timing belt broke - being repaired

Just yesterday I picked up an Aveo sedan. Its a galaxy silver metallic 5 speed. I'm pretty sure its the special value model as it comes with absolutely no power options. I bought it off the 2nd owner of the car. He knew the original owner and some of the history which was nice. It does have an aftermarket headunit in it with aftermarket rear speakers and lines run to the trunk for a sub which is kinda nice. I'll have to get specs on the headunit and speakers later. I really haven't done much with the car yet besides bring it home.

And off the trailer. The body is in pretty good shape. There is a decent size dent in the front passenger door, but that should be nothing to pop out. Rust wise its in great shape, besides the wheels.

Look, it even came with extra parts!

Oh... wait, maybe not. Yeah, the previous owner snapped the timing belt, and this is what happens when that happens. So, I have some fixing to do.

And, it also came with a tow hitch (which I find funny).

Look how sturdy it is LOL. Hang in there poor little sheet metal. Actually, to be honest this could be the right way to do things. I haven't looked to see if there is any supports in the spare wheel well.

Other than that, there isn't much to tell. The first owner must have been a single parent or something. The car was pretty dirty. The rear seat cracks were full of toys (got me some new match box cars ), and the door panels are beat up a decent amount. Front is fine, and the front passenger side doesn't look like it was ever used.

In any case, once I start doing some work with it I'll start a build thread to show it all.

      OW ... that piston

Think bits of the struck valves broke and fell into the cylinder when the belt snapped? That piston looks like hamburger! Something was bouncing around in there.

Would have been interesting to hear the racket it made (and I don't mean the swearing by the driver)!

Looking forward to the rebuild Tim.

Looks like a fun project. Should rebuild with higher compression pistons since you have to rebuild anyways.

I wouldn't tow anything with that thing (homemade hitch). If anything happens, you could be in some serious trouble. Have fun rebuilding.

Looks like a 2.0 turbo project.

I had been planning on simply rebuilding it... But, now that you mention it, what other engines can be dropped into the Aveo?

A catera motor will bolt in place, however I believe it will require the ecu amongst other things.
A 2.0 from a forenza/optra drops in and uses the same ecu, although you need the one from a forenza as the one from the aveo will make it run lean.
A 2.0 turbo from a sunbird also bolts in. Just depends how much work you want to do.

Any engine swap is going to require the matching parts.

all I was saying is that the 2.0 from the forenza uses all of the existing wiring in the aveo. No need to do modifications to make gauges work properly or anything like that. Just plug and play.
