coilovers, 15" wheels and 195/45r15 tires, cai, exhaust, any many more projects to come.
old stuff:
i don't want to keep putting up new threads so i am just going to start making this a progressive or build thread for my car....
keeping posted of what i am working on.
now that the suspension is on, i dont feel so strange taking pictures.. still looking for rims. and need to price factory fog lights and do the cruise mod..

last picture shows how i attached the flange and mated the pipe. there is still a flange right on the other side of the axle.
Cold Air intake:

Taken from a 92ish honda accord (discussed in another thread) cut down the pipes, and the couplers are all the right size.
I would recommend multiple fitments, and making your own brackets.
And Fog Lights! :

The car is missing enough of the factory harness that i decided against using any of it. After investigating, i could have entered the factory harness at the junction box beside the battery. But who really wants to take that all apart, and then spend @ $60 for a factory headlight switch? So i ran a relayed harness and switch, i have temp fogs in place until the chrome rings come in at the dealer though, still might order the correct Aveo5 foglights, or just modify the sedan ones i have. Also the switch does well in the spot, if it had the little fog light picture on it then it would appear factory, even though the picture makes it off. (if you install the switch there, you need to take that piece out, and unplug the power mirror switch harness from the back of it.)

Re: Finally took a picture of my car...
I thought you cant do the cruise mod to newer cars. I could be wrong tho. I just thought I remembered reading it.
-
Re: Finally took a picture of my car...
how much did you lower it by, it looks slammmmed
-
Re: Finally took a picture of my car...
it is on h&r, with the dead coil removed, and all the rubber isolaters changed to thinner poly ones. it seems to be about 2.25" lower than stock, but i didn't measure before i started and it is still the highest car i have owned. but there is about a 1/2" flat wheel gap left to the stock tires. i measured a bunch of other components while i was under there to make coil overs and a rear disc brake conversion kit. but i didnt measure the ride height, or for the wheel offsets. which is what i grabbed the measuring tool for.

Re: Finally took a picture of my car...
thats drop is sweeet, now get rims (who cares if winter is coming up)
-
Re: Finally took a picture of my car...
wow! that looks awesome! now u just need rims and some tint :]
it looks real good tho!
-
Re: Finally took a picture of my car...
wow!!! looks really nice!! whats this with all these yellow aveos?
-
Re: Finally took a picture of my car...
if it is any consolation. i picked a yellow aveo before joining this board. so i didnt know it would be so popular. on the street behind my house there are 2 black aveos, a silver one, a red one and a powder blue one (thats just counting hatchbacks), there is also a silver and black sedan.
when i was shopping it was between yellow, that teal color, black and orange. only ones available at the dealer were the teal and yellow (they also had graphite and dark red?). and the teal in person i didnt like all that much. and i have owned 4 yellow cars (67 bug, 85 chevette, 75 rabbit, 89 sedan deville) and have always been partial to yellow.
-
Re: Finally took a picture of my car...
Hello! Your aveo looks very sporty in yellow. And lowering is cool too. Hope you don't have much snow in winter. :-) I often see a yellow hatchback parked in front of the house opposite my building. And there is lots of other hatchbacks in the area. And often see one in a rare light blue green color near the garages that I can see from my window.
Just saw that funny advertisement on TV with a dancing Citroen C4 transformer.

Re: Finally took a picture of my car...
I'm all about the yellow aveos :)
-
Re: Finally took a picture of my car...
How much did you cut off the coil? Also, where did you get the aftermarket isolaters?
-
Re: Finally took a picture of my car...
i cut the bottom coil where it lined up with the end of the end of the spring, so one full circle came off.
the spring isolaters i have two, one is from a mustang and slips onto the spring. (looks like neoprene pipe insulation)
i have a bunch of tops and bottoms laying around from various cars, and got a bottom from my pile. the aveo is the first car i have actually needed to put isolaters in to stop the chatter. and i have lowered maybe 50 cars at my house, so i dont know what it came out of. but they look just like this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/_Car-Tru ... ht_718wt_0
but i have never lowered a datsun. but it had the same L cross section and not the U like a lot of the other cars use..

Re: Finally took a picture of my car...
what are spring isolaters, and what do they do? whats "chatter"?
-
Re: Finally took a picture of my car...
did you do the springs in your car yet?
the isolater is the rubber cup above and below the spring. it "isolates" the road and suspension noise from the shell of the car, so you dont hear it. honestly its just a cushion the spring rides in. but there is also a cushion that goes onto the coils of the spring themselves, you just slide it up the spring.
the aveo has two stock: one sits on the control arm and the other is on top of the spring. the lower is about 1/2-3/4" thick, and the top is like a 1/4-1/2" thick. it also has one as part of the spring retainer on the strut top in the front. you dont "need" them and in most of the cars i have owned in the past you dont hear any more road noise without them. but the light back end of the aveo allows some noise to come through without them.
Chatter, is a type of spring noise. "chatter" is typically the sound a metal falling, like when you hit a pothole and the suspension drops really fast it sounds like dropping bolts in the suspension. in the aveo i also got a lot of "twang" sounds over bumps before i put the isolater back on. its just the sound of the spring compressing and moving with it metal on metal.
they are names for how it sounds, these are not really technical terms but most of the guys i have works with use them.

Re: Finally took a picture of my car...
No, I haven't done the springs on my car yet, mostly due to the fact it's almost winter. But I really like the look of your drop so I was looking into what I'll do when it's time.
-
Re: Finally took a picture of my car...
Yo I love the look of your hatch. I got the same, only in the teal you were talking about.
Anyways, what springs exactly did you use. I looked but didnt see anything listed for the 'o9 yet so I was holding off. I actually probably live within 30-45 minutes of you, out past monroeville.
-
Re: Finally took a picture of my car...
the suspension is the same on the 09 as it is for all the others. So i got H&R's for an 08 in my search.
where past monroeville? there seem to be like 4 people on this board in pittsburgh.
-
Re: Finally took a picture of my car...
heres a question for ya, some are isted as 06-08 only and some say 04 and up, will it matter which ones I pick? and right in delmont. Not sure if your familiar with that town, I just moved here a while back and it doesnt seem to have much going for it. Maybe a Burgh meet is in order if the others want?
-
Re: Finally took a picture of my car...
when i was looking i found no difference, beyond just look for make and model i usually compare part numbers.
if the ones listed 04+ and the ones for 06-08 have the same part number (manufacturer not seller) then they are the same. if the part number is different then you need to look more into it, because they might have changes spring rates or something but i doubt they are different.
i know some of delmont, i have a friend in export. and i used to live in blairsville long long ago.

Re: Finally took a picture of my car...
They stiffened up the front struts in the 06 and went with an 18mm front swaybar instead of the 17mm. That said, the springs are the same.

Re: Finally took a picture of my car... (Lots of pictures now)
and up for a new edited posting..

Re: Finally took a picture of my car... (Lots of pictures now)

It's in the How-To section called Paint Inside of Headlights: viewtopic.php?f=22&t=865

Re: Finally took a picture of my car... (Lots of pictures now)
^ what he said.. pull them apart and paint them.
the wheels are circa 1995ish, borbet type c. They are a 16x7.5 with a 30mm offset.
You can find them cheap all over, but most of the borbet line is classic style, and look good on newer cars.
I still need to either space out the back wheel, or buy different wheels that are staggered.

Re: Finally took a picture of my car... (Lots of pictures now)
i got Eibach springs n they are for the 09 hatch. The car looks sic man. I located an hr and a half north of Pitt from u guys.
-
Re: Finally took a picture of my car... (Lots of pictures now)
Damn that looks good with black headlights, now get an 09 wing and call it a day
-
Re: Finally took a picture of my car... (Lots of pictures now)
Your Headlights, are very cool, do you have a DYI?
-
Re: Finally took a picture of my car... (Lots of pictures now)
i just did it, know enough people who have done it in the past, but the step kind of followed the DIY here. or do a search for "joey mod vw" on google.
http://www.vaglinks.com/Docs/VW/MKIV/Po ... od_DIY.pdf
that pdf kind of like what i did, but you dont need to mask, because the front chrome comes apart. MAKE sure to remove the screw from beside the turn signal bulb. Also it is not easy to remove the lense with the contours, so be patient.

stupid question the movie zach and miri make a porno was in "monroeville" any idea if they did any real filming there?
and subachad the 18mm front sway is that off the 09 bodystyle? i have an 05

Re: Finally took a picture of my car...
A few of my friends are extras in that movie. They filmed in quite a few places around the city, but i haven't seen it to be able to point out where.
Also on the brakes to discs: while it wont really help the car to stop (unless you do the front also) It will shave about 5-6 lbs overall from the weight of each corner for handling, and about 3-4 lbs of rotating mass for less drag, (feels like a little more hp). And yes looks are part of it, but i also have 11.3" brakes for the front sitting here. So with those combined i should be able to take a few feet off the stopping distance, have better long term braking during racing (the stock aveo brakes had a lot of brake fade last time i was out), and have brakes that will last longer, be easier to diagnose and change.

Re: Finally took a picture of my car... (Lots of pictures now)
Hey Rabbit,
You get the Rear Spacers yet?
-
Re: Finally took a picture of my car... (Lots of pictures now)
not yet, i have been weighing my options for a 9" rear wheel instead. the $100 could go towards that.
