Monte seats too harsh? My dad has a bad back too and he never once complained about my Monte's seats. He complained about how much lower to the ground my car is then his, (making it somewhat difficult to get into) but the seats were always described as comfy and supportive. As for features, at the time, the Monte's feature put it ahead of it's class with it's standard features. Onstar wasn't added to the Monte's though until 2000 I believe.
      - 1995 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Z34 - LQ1 3.4L DOHC 24 valve semi-hemi V6, 210 HP, 215 ft-lbs of torque, 4T60e 4 speed automatic with O/D.... 123,000+ miles. Slowly resto-modding it.
      - looking for a first gen Aveo for a daily driver :D

If the choice were completely mine, IDK what I would've went with. A brand new car in excellent shape, excellent for my lack of driving experience (I learned the hard way that I can't be trusted with a high perf car yet). Or a car that was used, and looked horrid in some areas, but would've made a fun senior project for high school if I had the money. Maybe I would've went with the Monte Carlo if I had the money to throw around for it. But as I said, I loved how the Aveo I picked out looked, and I have yet to run into any major problems with the car.

But the seat thing was extremely irritating for my dad. When you think of it being a '98, consider possibly how many people have driven that car, and their car care habits. Also, a quote from Jeff Foxworthy: "Buying a used rental car is kind of like going to a house of ill repute looking for a wife. Anything that's been driven that hard by that many people, you really don't want to put your key in it." Not that this Monte Carlo was a rental as far as I knew, but it could have been somewhere down the line.
