Hello all! My name is Mark and I just bought a 2008 Chevy Aveo LS with manual transmission. I've been driving it for about a month and have enjoyed it so far. I look forward to sharing with fellow Aveo owners and learning about my new car.
Thanks!

Welcome!
Miles?
Thanks!
bought it at 69500, just topped 70k
Do you know if the timing belt was done by the last owner(s)?
I have no idea actually. :?:
I would have it checked (or check it yourself). The timing belt service should be done every 60k miles and if not done on that interval, you run the risk of the belt breaking or a pulley failing (leading to bent valves and other problems that cost money).
If you bought it from a private owner, I would try to ask them if it was ever done. You can also look under the hood or in the car for any info that it was done (my shop put a sticker under the hood saying it was done for me).
I doubt it was changed though, you may want to look into it as soon as you can just to be safe.
Other than that, the car will last as long as you want it to, they are solid. The MPG's can be a bit low for the segment, but it does the job well enough. Also if you have not seen already, Rabbit has made a short-shifter kit if you are interested in mods (not sure if he has anymore though, pm him).
Thanks for the welcome an dheads up, thehunteroo. I've read some more info about it on here and elsewhere. I bought it forom a dealership and I wish I had know before purchasing the car so I can inquire about it.
But so far, teh car has been great and rides extremely smooth for a car in its class. It really has a lot of pickup in teh engine and it handles well. Only complaint so far is the radio. It has the stock radio and it could use some upgrading.
Thanks!
Yeah the stock radio sucks, though the stock speakers are pretty good themselves. If you put in a new radio, it makes a huge difference.
Welcome to the forum from another newbee. As thehunterooo said, it is a very reliable car that will give you great service. Having never changed a timing belt myself, but knowing the importance of it, or should I say the consequences of not replacing it at the proper mileage interval, everyone on the forum, like thehunterooo says, check to see if it has been changed, and if not, get it done. Enjoy the new ride!
Thanks Steve! Nice ride in your pic.
I would think the timing belt would start acting up before it snaps wouldn't it? Misfires, hard idles, and rough accelerations? Right now, mine runs smooth as silk so I am hoping it is good.
There seems to be a solid concensus on the forum by very knowledgeable Aveo owners who all agree on this point, get the belt changed at 60,000 miles. There may or maynot be any warning signs, but the damage it could cause is not worth chancing it. Thanks for the compliment about my ride!
There are no warning signs, it will just go (belt will break or pulley will break, etc....) you will know when it happens though, as you will be towing the car home :D It can run fine then just break, only way to know it is good is to have it changed or checked.
I was hoping you wouldn't tell me that... :(
I wish I wouldn't have to :D
I can not lie to you though, I do not want to see that "timing belt broken" thread ;)
It is not too bad though, like I said before, you can try to find out if it was ever done, if that does not pan out, you can have it checked, or if you want, have it changed. I still do not think it was changed if it was traded in, that may have been the reason for the trade-in in the first place.
Of course though, some people have had their belts last 100k+ miles, it is just one of those things.
A good shop can do the timing belt service (water pump, belt, pullies, etc) for $500~ and it should have a warranty so if they mess something up, it is on them. It is a soild car otherwise though, just follow the service intervals like the law and you will be good to go.
Welcome to the aveoforum Overdrive! :)
Well, you got yourself a ticking time bomb......LOL!!! :bom: Seriously, go get your timing belt inspected and see if the work has already been done and don't regret your choice of vehicle. I'm a 2008 Aveo5 LT owner and I love this car from the very first day I did the test drive. I'm sure you will love it too!
Thanks, Aveo5_boy! I do love the car. Other than the timing belt thing, I am really enjoying it. I wish we could petition Chevrolet to do a recall or come up with a fix for it.
Changing the timing belt is like changing your oil, tires etc...it is regular maintenance (at the 60k intervals that is) it is not a problem that you would have a recall over, the interference engines are just they way they are. Read this....

I guess it is just new to me since I drove a Ford truck for over 15 years and 200,000 miles and never had to deal with timing chain/belt issues.
Oh well, I like the car otehrwise, so I will just have to get it looked at. ;)
Yeah, non-interference engines are nice :D
