Stunningly fresh Aveo owner from New Jersey
Hi,
Since today I'm the proud owner of a 2010 Aveo LS 5!

To be honest, the main reason I got an Aveo is because I didn't want to spend too much on a commuter car. But I might as well enjoy the ride, right? Tomorrow will be my first commute. So I'm a bit nervous. [-o<
Regards,
Bart

Re: Stunningly fresh Aveo owner from New Jersey
Thanks everyone for watching!
No plans to pimp it right now. But who knows what the future brings? I was mainly looking for a very economical commuter. I like small cars, I don't need anything fancy and I like driving stick. All those came together in my new car, so here I am.
It replaces a 2002 Ford Focus that did very well but was starting to fall apart. It had enough issues that made me suspect that passing inspection was going to be costly: running on 3 cylinders (the car sounded like a Chinook helicopter) + gasoline smell through the A/C, popping the trunk would randomly work (or not), the radio died, a suspension that saw 135,000 miles of New Jersey roads and at that point a timing belt replacement cannot be far away either. Did I mention rust at the bottom of the bodywork? That was a second hand car that turned out to have some hidden issues after driving it for almost a year, so I didn't feel like sinking too much money in it.

Old and new. Aah, I forgot: the driver side mirror is held in place with tape. The left front wheel cover got scraped off by a bad pothole, together with the balancing weights. Makes the car a pleasure to drive!
I hope the Aveo will last me for at least 100,000 miles - but maintaining it well and being the first owner of the car should make that not too hard.
Aah: the color. I like a light (metallic) color for better visibility. So when talking to the dealer I told them "but I'm not passing up on a good deal if the car is black or racing red". Well, "racing red" it is. :)

Congrats on the new Aveo!
Early impressions? What do you like most / least so far?

What I like most is the intelligence of the car. Radio stays on after taking the key out of the ignition but turns off when you open the door, that kind of stuff. Haven't had the chance to find out if the wipers, just as with the Renault Megane I drove aeons ago, would switch automatically from continuous to interval when the car comes to a halt (say, at a traffic light). Something else I like is the "dark dashboard".
At higher speeds the car is a bit more noisy that I'd like it to be. And during the summer I will find out how brilliant my decision was to choose for window ventilation and not an a/c. :?

So... what car was your 2nd choice?

Guess that depends where you live. That, and everyone's different in the amount of heat they can live with.
In eastern Ontario, there's only about 2-3 weeks of weather each summer that I'd call "hot". I've never owned a car with A/C.
Get yourself a beaded seat cover for the hot weather - keeps the air moving behind your back and under your butt - makes a big difference.

Re: Stunningly fresh Aveo owner from New Jersey
i have priced out everything to install a/c in my car, have some of the parts, it will be @ $350 in parts (only because i cannot find the 3 a/c lines used...)
look in front of your radiator and on your firewall. My 09 has both an AC heater box with the evaporator already installed in the dash, and the condenser and dryer in front of the radiator. It also appears the AC compressor bracket is already in place along with all the wiring connections.

I love red cars (and 2 of my cars are red). Red cars seem to look good no matter what.
But you're in Jersey and you bought one with no A/C??? I'm starting to sweat just thinking about it. :(
I'm on Long Island and wouldn't want to be without A/C. :|

In my previous car I kept the A/C off as much as possible for various reasons and I'd end up using it maybe two weeks per year. I'm not saying it would be very nice to have - it definitely is - but I'll see how I get through this summer. Otherwise I will have to consider modding the car. Not a bad thing either. :)

Don't forget, last summer was comparatively a very cool one in this area - as summers go.

Hmm. Gonna make it an Aveo convertible? 8) =D>

I know. But I've driven more than one summer with almost no airco. I'm not saying it is super comfortable. But it still beats riding a bike to work. And it's one piece less that can break or needs refilling. Worst case scenario I'll fit an a/c in, but there are a couple of other avenues to explore first.
Making the car a convertible seems indeed the way to go. Four saw cuts is all it needs. And at the end of the summer I can use the left over gaffer tape from the focus (didn't need that much for the driver side mirror) to stick the roof back to the car.
The alternative is to put plug an inverter into the power port and hook up a table-sized refrigerator that I put in the rear (rear seats down, obviously). Simply remove the door of the refrigerator and tadaa! Instant cooling.
[-X Don't worry. I'm pretty good at physics. I know it doesn't work that way...
...because there is no air circulation! I will place a fan in the refrigerator to solve that. :^o

A few packs of dynamat will solve that problem pretty quickly. Or just turn your sound up - you won't hear the road noise. :D Welcome to the forum.

I know you are joking about the refrigerator, but an electric fan might be a very useful idea. Back in the bad old days (before A/C) they actually made accessory fans for the interior of a car. I remember my father had one that had a rubber blade on it.

Tower A/C for a small room with a converter. ;)

I can mount a propeller on my son's hamster wheel.
Heck, if I mount it on the roof I will even save gas.

Re: Stunningly fresh Aveo owner from New Jersey
by the time you spend the money on a converter that can hand ac...
that said i love me some swamp cooler  from my air cooled vw days..

Is there a way that thing can be converted into a ramjet? With four doors you should be able to mount four of them on you car :D

Yeah, but I don't know of anyone giving away dry ice for free. :|
OTOH, if you go with the wet towel and blower routine, at best it would probably be like getting hit in the face with a wet wash cloth.
Gee, the humidity in Jersey is bad enough - and usually worse than the heat.

Re: Stunningly fresh Aveo owner from New Jersey
thats the first swamp cooler i saw for a car, i thought it was just when you took a fan and put dry ice in front of it. (did it once worked pretty well)

Re: Stunningly fresh Aveo owner from New Jersey
that link was just for an explanation. i paid $25 for mine for my air cooled beetle, and there is a place near buy that sells dry ice for $.50 a lb.. lasts an entire day. less strain than a open fridge in the back seat
Installing factory AC only cost me about $300.
