Angry Aveo MPG / mileage: official fuel economy ratings 2004-2011 (U.S. EPA)

The Aveo's fuel efficiency has improved respectably since it launched as a 2004 model:

      • In 2004 it was the least efficient car in its segment in the North American market based on the EPA "combined" rating.[/*:m:275ksiqc]
      • For model year 2010 the car is mid-pack. On top of that, Aveo's power output has also increased slightly.[/*:m:275ksiqc]
      • GM has stated that its goal for the next generation Aveo is "best in class" fuel economy (though they didn't specify whether they were talking "market class" or "EPA class").[/*:m:275ksiqc]

EPA ratings are: City / Combined / Highway

      2004 - hatchback and sedan
      5-speed . . . . . . 23 / 27 / 32 MPG (US) - new EPA rating *
      5-speed . . . . . . 27 / 30 / 35 MPG (US) - old *
      automatic . . . . . 23 / 26 / 31 MPG (US) - new EPA rating *

      automatic . . . . . 23 / 26 / 32 MPG (US) - EPA

      2009 - hatchback and sedan
      5-speed . . . . . . 27 / 30 / 34 MPG (US) - EPA
      automatic . . . . . 25 / 28 / 34 MPG (US) - EPA

      2010 - hatchback and sedan
      5-speed . . . . . . 27 / 30 / 35 MPG (US) - EPA
      automatic . . . . . 25 / 28 / 34 MPG (US) - EPA

      2011 - hatchback and sedan
      5-speed . . . . . . 27 / 30 / 35 MPG (US) - EPA
      automatic . . . . . 25 / 28 / 34 MPG (US) - EPA

---[*] Note: for model year 2008 the EPA changed the way it determines fuel economy ratings, resulting in lower numbers to better reflect "real world" results. They went back and calculated the "new" MPG formula along with the "old" ratings for pre-2008 cars. Both the new and old are shown above.

I have never gotten 26 mpg even in the coldest months here in MN on 30 below days of going into work I got 27 mpg for my tank avg. Best so far 39.1mpg all us. Not satisfied yet though, want to break 40 and keep going.

I have been consistantly around 32 on good days, I have peaked at 37 going to Pennsalvanya (sp) and as crappy as 30. Now I am getting 34 on my last few trips. Now I am working to add a few miles by changing up suspension and tires.
Please do not power off, firmware update pending.....

My 04 sedan which does 90% highway driving has always gotten 30mpg. I've always been happy with that considering my other vehicle is a Suburban.
Missing our beloved 1st gen Aveos everyday!
Silence is golden. Duct tape is silver!!
04 Aveo (mine gone but never forgotten)
07 Aveo 5 (wifes car gone but never forgotten)
02 Suburban (Eats gas stations as snacks)
      12 Cruze Eco 6MT
      (46mpg daily? Holy crap!)
12 Sonic 2LT (Wifeys new wheels)

Chevoo-1/2 Chevy, 1/2 Daewoo. I mean like WTF?

I am bumping this thread, it really needs to be made a sticky as well, use the new EPA numbers on the 2008-2011 models.

Getting a solid 35mpg avg with mostly city driving in my 04 hb auto. I honestly think I get worse mileage when driving on the highway.
