what would give better gas mileage between downshifting or putting it into neutral? also any tips on getting better gas mileage? what would you recommend as a top speed. also what would be the lowest rpm i should shift? i use to shift at 3000, now around 2000 is this good or bad? manual 2010 aveo5.

Not sure it matters in terms of MPG, but down shifting is good for slowing down where as neutral is not.Quote:

that sounds pretty normal. Keepit in the 2000 2500 range and thats the best your going to get.
I have never downshifted. When you're slowing down or coming to a stop, there is no sense in continuing to have your RPM's up which is an accurate indicator of how much gas you are using. The more you can have your car going at the necessary speed with the lowest RPM's possible, the better fuel economy you will get. (Within reason, don't strain your transmission trying to drive 10 MPH in 4th gear for low RPM's.) If I am going down a hill, coming to a stop sign/stoplight, or am coming to a speed limit reduction, I put the car in neutral and let it coast.
With only regular oil changes and an occasional bottle of fuel injector cleaner I have been receiving an average of 31-33 MPG which is a mix of town and highway driving. (average suburban driving).
Ummm....no. Engine braking doesnt use gas. Next, are you gonna tell me the brake pedal uses gas? and rpms arent any sort of an indicator of gas being used. High rpms can use less gas than upshifting too, especially while accelerating on a hill.Quote:

i drive in the mountains all the time and when you leave it in gear coming down the other side of the hill or down shift the aveo cuts the fuel to the injectors so you are getting free mpg essentially, and yes under certain conditions downshifting to 4th or even third you can get better fuel economy in the hills, as a result i achieve a consistant 31 mpg in the Rockies and i dont drive nice either, im usually doing 125 kmh or more. you reallly lose mpg at those speeds.
+1 on downshift to slow down! neutral when stopped to save throwout/pilot bearing.
I have a manual 1.4, the latest research I read was that accelerating briskly to 2,000RPM got the best economy but I can't remember where I read this. As for downshift vs neutral, you should always stay in gear to drive in coastdown where the ECU cuts fuel but I've recently been experimenting with downshifting when coming to a stop or turn. The Scanguage e I'm using does show how the engine is in coastdown throughout downshifting so no fuel is being used and I guess it's saving the brake pads.
Depends on the situation -- there's no simple answer. Are you *trying* to slow down? Then engine braking is probably better, since in gear, deceleration fuel cut-off uses no fuel (when above approx. 1500 RPM). If you're trying to get the maximum distance in a "coast", then neutral obviously slows you down less and you'll go farther.Quote:

Same idea for manual transmission: your best mileage will be at the lowest speed you can cruise in top gear. It only goes down from there. As a rough rule of thumb, expect to spend about 1% more on gas for each 1 km/h you go over 100 km/h.
2000 is better than 3k. Lower than that is also fine as long as you don't lug (shudder) the engine when accelerating/climbing a hill. For best cruising mileage, get into the highest gear you can use as soon as you can. It's even OK to shift to 5th if you're cruising at low load and low speed (eg. 60 km/h). But of course you will have to downshift if you need power.Quote:

DOWNSHIFTING is best because you stay off your breaks. i always down shift when hitting a turn or comeing to a stop. i shift at 4k rpm because i like the sound of my car around thos rpms. yeah i may use a lil more gas but i really dont care lol. plus it makes my car so much more faster when i shift higher. 1st gear sucks i shift at like 3k rpm 2-4 are my speed gears where i can feel the engine do its job to get me up to speed on ramps to interstates or when my buddy pulls beside me and wants to race to the next light lol. my best 0-60 time so far with no weight reduction is about 8.5 seconds i believe the 0-60 of a stock aveo is like 11. but again im not worried about mpg because regardless my car eats gas and oil. plus my company pays my gas and oil so its free for me except weekends.
No way you are hitting 60 in 8.5... I have tons of mods and best I can pull is a 10.0 dead. Full 2" piping, no cat, proper CAI, coilovers (help with launch, less squat) and amazing summer tires

mine was slightly i would say down hill but where i live in ga there is no flat roads lol.
i will make a video next time and post. maybe my buddy hit stop to quick sence he was in the car beside me idk... cant drive and hit stop at same time...
Stopwatch+speedo are unreliable. Mine was on a drag strip...
My scan gauge has a 0-60 feature as well. Best I've gotten that at is 9.6sec. But as i said stock speedo can be unreliable
Ohhh I c my mistake. My bad. Disregard my 0-60 time im a lil drunk lol. I will search for a flat rd and re state my 0-60.
I use a app on my phone that uses gps to track my speed. There roughly the same but I do hit 99 slightly faster on gps than spedo after 99 it doensnt read lol
How much did it cost to run on a drag strip? Atlanta moter speed way is like a hr from my house...

I would not down shift unless you need extra faster stops, because brakes are cheaper easier to replace then a clutch. neutral obviously slows you down less and you'll go farther. But the rpm drops to 1000RPM coast at idle speed. If you’re going to work, time the lights using gas & neutral still save the brakes.

Times have changed, and technology has improved and when it comes to fuel economy and overall economy i would agree that brake discs are cheaper than clutches.
In my experience, it doesn't make a huge difference what you do (downshifting, nuetral, staying in gear until you're almost stopped) MPG wise. It's very subtle so long as you drive well. I always anticipate my stops early and start to let the car slow itself, then I downshift with rev matching to not wear the clutch. Then once I have to use the brakes, I heel-toe downshift (again to not wear the clutch excessively) to come to a stop. I will only downshift to 3rd or 2nd depending on the conditions. If I can easily stop, 3rd - if I'm facing downhill or just need to stop quick for some reason I get into 2nd. The engine will naturally want to drop its speed, helping you in slowing down. I don't always do this, sometimes I can anticipate a stop and just gently brake in gear. My mileage never changed much. I did tests driving my same routes using only neutral and braking, downshifting and braking, leaving it in gear and braking, and heel-toe downshifting. The mileage was basically the same for all of them, only varying maybe 1 or 2 MPGS at the most. So, I'd say do what you like doing. I personally just feel more in control downshifting, because it really helps slowing you down. But some people think it's extra work.
Always downshift. When done properly there is little wear on the clutch & drivetrain. The driver should be ready to apply power if needed at any time, and selecting the wrong gear while coasting down will do alot more damage.
