I got 41.5 MPG (5.67L/100km) once in my 2005 Automatic Aveo

I am wondering if this is unusual and how on earth I ended up achieving it.

About 3 or so years ago I drove to Timmins Ontario from Toronto Ontario and back, I drove 1410KM total and I only used about 80 litres of gas, that worked out to 41.5 MPG (5.67L/100km) and I swear I am not trolling.

Has anyone else ever achieved numbers like this in their automatic Aveo? When my Aveo was on the road I always got about 10L/100KM (23MPG) mostly city so I never thought to much of the highway trip to Timmins until I happened to be looking at the forum and saw that my Aveo was only rated for 31 MPG highway.......

There were no mods done, bone stock. Drove about 90 the whole way (55 MPH) and only stopped to use the bathroom once.

It's not that unusual at all.

That's how you achieved it right there. Moderate speed & a long drive (very short trips will always have lower fuel economy). Have a look at this:

From: Graph of MPG/fuel economy vs. speed, 2004 Aveo sedan (automatic)

Almost every car will significantly beat its highway MPG rating at 55 mph / 90 km/h.

I drove from Timmins, ON to Mont-Laurier, QC and averaged 42mpg. I wanted to see how good the car was when you babied it. The rest of the way to Moncton, NB, I averaged about 37mpg, with a stretch between Edmunston, NB to Moncton, NB where I averaged 32mpg.

      Average speeds were

Timmins to Mont-Laurier: 90kph (56mph) That was about 630km (394 miles) on one tank (I did put 42L (11gal.) in).
      Mont-Laurier to Edmunston: 100kph (62mph)
Edmunston to Moncton: 135kph (84mph) I love NB highways. 110kph posted limit.

I was surprised to see the 110 km/h limit in NB the first time I drove through. (Also the nicely paved, wide highways with the fences to keep the forest beasties from becoming hood ornaments.)

Before that trip, I figured Alberta & Sask were the only provinces with the higher limits ... because they have all that extra oil to burn.

That's a long trip! Yes the roads are nice here. It's a big bummer when you get to the Quebec border and have to slow down quite a bit because of the old highway 185. Posted limit is 90kph. They'll have that stretch of highway widened and speed limit upped soon though.

I had no choice. The last gas station was about midway through the trip and I decided I could make it. I wouldn't have made it if I drove normaly, which for me is about 10kph above posted.

The limit was 90 and I was taking in the scenery (first time driving through Northern Ontario) what can I say?

And thanks for the links MetroMPG, I had to no idea that this was so possible, I thought for sure I had some "positive" gremlin in the car with me that day causing it to use less gas.

i regularly drove at 120-130, when youve got great headlights and drive the same 1200 kms every week you get used to it and know where the fuzz likes to hide, but i never saw 41 mpg at those speeds i was around 25 which is still really acceptable
