Our cars are too big. This car you mention has a motorcycle engine (998 cc). The curb weight is about 1700 pounds. Some places in Europe use imperial gallons so their mpg ratings would be different. Don't know if that's the case here. Just a few reasons.

us emissions / us suv safety standards suck..

New 2010 VW Polo: lighter, safer, higher mpg (71), better looking... Coming here? - Fuel Economy, Hypermiling, EcoModding News and Forum - EcoModder.com
      (this guy looks familiar)

too bad chevy, ford, chrysler have no real incentive to build something similar so those that do will bring theirs to the us..

or even for the extreme (but supposed to be vailable via special order in europe?)

Well, Chevy just announced they'll be bringing over a diesel engine for the Cruze in 2013. Its about time they started bringing over diesels IMO. Also, Ford is doing the same as Chevy and putting a 1.0L turbo engine in the Fiesta in the future as well. More horsepower than the 1.6L and better mileage.
