btw did you at least get your KFC :P
After paying $200 to have my 03's Cavalier's fuel pump replaced I never like to let it run below a quarter line... When it hits that line - I know it's time to look for a gas station.

Thanks for the warning! My Focus has a "low gas" light that went on with about one gallon left in the tank - so I could easily to 20, 30 miles on it.
Unbeknownst to what horrors where waiting around the corner, I had my fuel-o-meter almost on "E" yesterday before I got gas. Now I know to be a bit more conservative with that.
On the plus, compared to mr. Focus, the fuel gauge seems fairly accurate - the 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and F marks do seem to -at least vaguely- correspond with what's in the tank.
Unlike the focus where 3/4 really meant "half full" (and from there it went to empty pretty fast, especially once the car was running on only 3 cylinders)
I know this is resurecting an old post but I too have pushed the limits in my 04 sedan. I once pushed it to 325 miles. I filled up say "damn, I almost drained the tank". Never did it again. I'll run her up to 300 miles and thats about it. I always end up filling back up putting in 10 gallons or a little more.

Well there only 45Liter tank and I usually do run my tank that low, but like to see how low it will get.
So I ran it down to the light and the light does not always go on at the same place but close.
I have run it down to only having 3 or 4 liters in the tank. Now if you use the trip that will help you a bit.
But it depends on how much idling how hard you take off & how fast you’re driving, as to when the light goes on but it normally goes on in the red to under the red. Now that without any dent in the tank.
Oh the older the car the more you should not go lower then 1/4 tank because of dirt other stuff that gotten in the tank after years fill up. Then the pump suck that up easier kills the pump faster.
You can get to know how mean K's or M's on a tank is the safey using the trip, before you really need looking for gas station. (With your driving habbits)
Oh when I was doing this I also had 5 liters on gas in the car just in case and this was in the first year I had the car. I also know the neck hold all most about two liters more
