Stock Air filter box - psudo ram air concept

Got an idea I want to try...looking for knowledge or potential issues I may run in to...

I haven't actually pulled off the wheel-well splash guard yet so I'm working blind on what I think it may look like in there at the moment.

      It's a 2005 Aveo hatchback

I want to get a little better gas mileage and noticed the little black plastic insert (where fog lights would be I guess) on the bottom passenger side of the front bumper doesn't actually let air through...

I'm thinking I can keep my stock filter box (and the K&N filter I have in it), drill out plastic from the holes in the mesh on that piece and then take out the pre-filterbox tube (or keep it if it will reach) and put in an extended one that will open right behind the now functional little black insert...

Other than that little change I'd keep everything connected just the way it is - just seems like a better location for the pre-filter intake.

      What do you think?

For any car that would be better place, just water puddles that are high enough cover the air inlet. Other than that if trying to running duel tubes for both sides, might be hard. I would try to put in pre filter messing cut down some dirt& debris that would have to be checked more often cleaned.( maybe something like body scatchbrite pads, pack cut in half you can blow them wash them clean a few time toss them.) It would have to be somewhat opened but able to help keep larger debris from clogging your K&N filter.
      This is only my thoughts.

Good luck on you work, in this area keep us up dated.

People have done this before, you might as well get CAI honestly.

yeah - I was going to do that but the budget's a bit tight at the moment so this is the best idea I had to get a bit more out of my little 1.6 without spending bucks...

Brillo pad is a good idea - thanks. I'm not sure what I'm going to put behind it yet.
I was thinking a window screen maybe (I work for a home builder so it wouldn't be much trouble to get some scraps) but I think a brillo pad would do a better job filtering out some of the junk.

Just gotta keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't get clogged and restrict airflow I guess

You can get the CAI for $40, and sell the stock intake for more

You would be very happy with the CAI, I know I was

      Welcome to the forum btw!!!

      Thanks for the welcome!

Not a bad idea...Which CAI did you pick up? Was it a full CAI or is it the shorter ram cone?

I'd been looking at the full CAI on Ebay from Chome Intakes for $65 but if I went that route I'd probably shell out the extra $40 to get the K&N with it...so really it'd be $105 once it was all said & done...

I had looked at the shorter ram intake from them as well but from what I've read it seems to be debatable how much of an increase I'd see over the K&N I already have in it & on top of that I'd probably have to spend some time and money figuring out how to fashion a heat shield since the engine compartment is so small.

So that's how I got to this idea...didn't realize I could sell the stock intake for over $40 though - that kind of changes things...

My bad, I bought mine 3 years or so ago, they went up a little haha. Short ram is a joke, you will want the CAI though, filter does not really matter, but people such as myself are always looking for stock intakes

You dont need to shell out that extra money for the k&n intake...All you are doing it paying for the brand name as an intake is really just an aluminum tube with an air filter attached to it... its nothing special or out of this world...and if you know how to weld, you can make your own intake.

You don't need to know how to weld to do air intake plumbing. You can alter it by using PVC pipe and rubber fittings.

But you won't improve your MPG any by playing with it and introducing more cold air in. If anything your available power might increase slightly, but your MPG will decrease.
