07 aveo svm, no ac, 5 speed, cool air intake, exhaust mod, 42 psi, 5w20 synthetic, mostly highway @ 60 mph... 43+ mpg. Makes me feel good about selling my motorcycles. Curious what I will get with tires at 46 psi, back seat removed, and power steering removed.

maybe one more on the highway or so, 43+ is solid though, you should drive at 55mph and see what you get...
Blocking off the upper grill will probably get you another 1 mpg too. The lower grill is still plenty of area for cooling.
Cool! I'll try that with the grill. Just wondering, upper is everything above the bumper and lower is everything below? I don't know much about it, but I wonder if the upper grill could do a better job of cooling? Even though it has less surface area, it should be cooling the hottest area (since heat rises?). I'm not sure though. Might be fun to do an experiment with the laser thermometer.
Would be interesting to see what I get at 55, but I don't want to drive that slow on a regular basis. The speed limits around here fluctuate between 55 and 65. I can comfortably cruise at 60 without disrupting traffic too much or getting a ticket. Maybe I'll get one of those fancy obd gauges. Then I could see myself REALLY obsessing about mpg, lol.
Also, I'm hoping that cutting out the power steering and back seat will make a bigger difference around town. I was averaging 37+ with mostly town / some backroad driving (I avoid braking and 1st as much as possible, and I'm in 5th before 25 mph). Would love to get that up to 40 and maybe close to 50@55 on the highway... Maybe I'll think about fixing the rear bumper drag as well.
I love having a small car. It no longer seems worth sweating/shivering/risking my life for a little extra gas savings. Although my 250cc cruiser was averaging almost 100 mpg before I sold it. I also love how cheap this car is compared to the smart car, which my friend gets only about 35 mpg with. And I can fit a lot more crap in the aveo plus haul a 1 ton load.
Nah, for cooling it won't matter. The coolant is pumped through the radiator, so it won't be hotter on top. Also, the lower grill is more then enough to cool your engine (unless you're driving through a desert on a crazy hot day). In addition, blocking the upper grill helps more with aerodynamics than the lower grill.
I use to get 35 driving the piss out of it but now I'm only getting 27 at best and I can't figure out y? I gave it a tune up and that didn't even help. I also switched to synthetic oil.
is this over the winter that you were getting 27 ? or were you getting 35 and just now am getting 27?
Over the winter I got down to as low as 21mpg. I know gas mileage goes down during the winter but it shouldn't go down that much. We r starting to get better gas in now but I'm only up to 27mpg at the best. and that with driving carefully. Back when I got into the 30's I wasn't so carefull of a driver but now I have aq kid.
27 now after winter gas got replaced
