      Top Tier Fuel?

      Hey guys,

I appreciate all of the help and information with all of my questions! So I have one more for you...

Has anyone really noticed a difference by using Top Tier fuels (http://www.toptiergas.com)? I know the manual recommends using them, but I've always had good luck with BP, which isn't recommended. I am just curious if it is worth searching them out or if any gas will do?

      Thanks!

can't say, i "prefer" that everything running through my engine is gas, i don't even like the 10% ethanol. But i have to live with it.

BP and sunoco do great in my aveo. All our local gas comes from the same distribution hub, its just the "cocktail" of additives is varied depending on which companies gas it is. I guess its one of those additives (or even a higher abundance of ethanol?) that i feel the mileage slip away.. i dont know the chemical make ups, or the differences between companies otherwise. but that is my observation.

Haha, probably but there could be some merit to it which is why I was curious. I didn't know if it's worth being loyal any particular brand if in the end the mileage is pretty much equal. And I was curious if our cars were that sensitive to different fuels and a 10% ethanol mix.

Any gas works fine. That manual is just marketing and sponserships and increase revenue.

      Smoke and mirrors, my friend.

It's not just smoke and mirrors or marketing or sponsorships. It's so that people put gas that conforms to a certain standard and cover GM's ass in case someone decides to put racing fuel in and blow the engine up. They have to recommend at the very least a product that conforms to an international standard regardless of where it is purchased.

Sorry to disappear from the forums! It's good to be back! I've been running non-top tier fuels since there is nothing near my new home, but last night I ran a top tier (Phillips 66) since I was near a big city. I think there was *some difference*. I got right at 35 and that was with A/C doing 65. Typically I get 33 or so. I wouldn't take this as a scientific study, but maybe someone could try?

I can tell you that Top Tier certainly makes my Mercruiser 3.0l run better. Not sure about my Aveo.

One side benefit of Top Tier is the additives. Top Tier fuel is specifically recommended, for example, in a TSB for the in tank fuel pump in my 2005 Silverado. Running poor quality gas will impact on the fuel pump longevity.

I don't know about top tier exactly, but as long as you get your gas from a more well known location, and not those discount pumps, you should usually be ok. I personally fill up at a specific Kwik Star when I'm in my home town, It's very good gas and I get great mileage. If I'm not in my home town I look for Sinclair, or BP usually. Good gas at a reasonable price, not to cheap, not over priced truck stop crap.

I know different gas works in different cars, for example the Honda I used to drive hated BP (Amoco at one time) gas.
