      What the heck?

There has been a lot of complaints over how poor the Aveo's fuel economy is, yet the competition is either the same or worse.

I recently looked at an automatic Mazda2, and it's highway (33mpg) is lower than an automatic Aveo. It's engine is smaller, it has less power, it's lower, and lighter, but it still gets worse fuel economy than an Aveo?

It's a trend, where the car manufacturers want their higher profit margin compacts and mid-size sedans to have far better fuel economy than their smaller brethren. A Chevy Malibu gets the same fuel economy as an Aveo, and that freakin' sucks . Honda's Civic gets better than the Fit, and the new Elantra absolutely kills the Accent in fuel economy. All of them do this! Anyone have any opinions?

high way numbers are slightly easier to get with a bigger engine because the engine can have a lower rpm with the extra hp to push the car closer to idle.

ex. (not doing ALL the math)

1.6 liter 4 cylinder at 4000 will consume about the same amount of gas as a 3.2 liter at 2000 rpm.
when you add in gearing, fuel control systems, etc then you can draw out the mpg because you can lose hp to add efficiency.

based on epa testing, idling the car through the test is possible do to gearing. the manufacturer absolutely does set gearing to skew those numbers.

our cars really "excel" around town comparatively.

If you want a car cheap on gas get a Toyota Yaris, my friend lent me his a few years ago when my car broke down at his place.

Back then i used to travel 25 mins to get to work 1 way, I would put 20 bux of gas every 2-3 days in the Aveo, back then i also had my stock 1.6L. The same 20 bux in the Yaris lasted me the entire week and then some. More then twice the fuel economy... It left me speechless at how that little car doesnt take gas. And its also slightly faster then a stock Aveo!

It must have been a manual Yaris. They can get 40 mpg pretty easily.

This is what I have to say about car manufacturers altering the gearing for the EPA tests.

I think the main complaint was with the first gen Aveos. They had pretty crappy mileage IMO. Here is a compairison between the 2005 Aveo manual/automatic vs Toyota's then comparable car, the Echo.

The throttle is way too sensitive, the gearing freakin' sucks, and the engine needs an overhaul. You can see how dramatic the change in EPA fuel economy ratings are when you compare the 2004-2008 engine to the 2009+ one. And not too much changed other than the placement of the waterpump onto the accessory belt, and a variable-valve timing mechanism. GM definitely has the potential to create a subcompact killer for fuel economy.

If they can get 37 MPG out of a 2.2 liter in the Cobalt, they can get even better with a heavily revised Aveo.
