If you want a car cheap on gas get a Toyota Yaris, my friend lent me his a few years ago when my car broke down at his place.

Back then i used to travel 25 mins to get to work 1 way, I would put 20 bux of gas every 2-3 days in the Aveo, back then i also had my stock 1.6L. The same 20 bux in the Yaris lasted me the entire week and then some. More then twice the fuel economy... It left me speechless at how that little car doesnt take gas. And its also slightly faster then a stock Aveo!
