enjoying the show i was, if i was not here things would be a bore
Here's the latest pan of cars to avoid. (of course the Aveo makes the list): click here
Yahoo seems to churn this out every six months.
Reminds me of a car dealership from where I grew up. They had a parts car for sale for $200 once. My dad was looking it over, when the salesman comes out. Salesman says "the car is done for, but there are still a lot of good parts in it, see any you could use?" Dad said "I see plenty I could use, I have a car with the same motor, and a few other parts, but i'm not interested." Dealers, "Why not sir?"
Because it comes from this company.
Sometimes a place just isn't worth the lot it sits on.
yahoo just spews out "rewritten" reviews from jd power, etc..
they dont have their own thinkers or self review.
the fit is better
I bought my Aveo even after I heard how bad it was. I have had one problem, the dealership corrected it in the same day under warranty, and I haven't had a problem with it since. *Knock on wood*
I don't take what the experts have to say to heart. I've test driven many of its competitors before buying it, and I am happy with my purchase. If may not be the best, but I nearly won a race with a $30,000 2011 Toyota Sienna in my 'junk' Aveo. I laughed so hard.
i think the reason the aveo gets such bad ratings is the timing belt...people forget to check it and change it when their suppose to and when that goes people throw a hissy fit. The other thing is people probably get ripped off at the dealer and pay too much for their aveo and then expect the quality to be better that the 10k car it is. My aveo has been the best investment ever. Its all paid off and its still running fine at 105,000 miles. The only problems I have had are minor and were due to my modifications and my drive it like i stole attitude when I was younger. Yea the suspension growns occasionally and the car rattles over bumps but it still gets me from point A to point B consistently and for cheap.
Hi all,
I just have to say you guys are so lucky to be able to get an aveo for such a cheap price.
Where I come from it costs ~$23k ++ for a new one.
Yes where else but in Malaysia can such american cars be sold at a high price...
So my wife and I had to opt for a 2nd hand one, which cost immediately $14k USD after 1.5 yrs.
Had driven it for about 1.5 yrs now...so 3 yrs manufacture's warranty almost over....
Had a few troubles with it, but lucky manage to claim warranty for it still...
Below are my list of issues:besides that also I feel the car is definitely under powered with the 1.4L engine variant they sell in this region.
- Air con freezing after few hours of continuous driving causing the blower to be blocked... - dealers replaced the compressor for me under warranty claim but not solving the issue and was told to just live with it and to switch off my aircon manually each time the freezing happens...
- Engine die off intermittently, replaced throttle body after 5visits to finally confirmed it's worn off, solved the issue this one....
- Rear defogger not working, replaced after 3 visits to confirm it's not working to claim warranty parts. so whole rear mirror was replaced...
- (lost my car keys, this one is not covered of course, had to replace one which cost about ~$170 USD if converted....)
- engine or air con giving burning smell on up hill climb, but dealers says problem was not reproducable and keeps ignoring it....
with a 4 gear auto trans, it really felt heavy and under powered.
MPG was like 25.5 on average, best ever was 34(highway/freeway/motorway whatever way you call it...), city driving was like 22.
question to the experts:
Does any of you used the X1R fuel saver ****?
Could it have caused my throttle body to worn off so quickly?
My story to owning an aveo:
We were searching for a non-local made car, because our streets are simply filled with them...we wanted something which looks different in our city....the ONLY options available for our budget however is ONLY a new proton saga, perodua myvi, (all local cars).
2nd hand options was chevy aveo1.4 sedan 1.5yrs, and a 5yrs peugeot 206
test driven peugeot 206 felt small and a bit unstable with a bit of noise here and there since it's already 5 yrs old.
test driven the aveo, felt sturdy and quite comfy...
went to proton dealer to request to test drive a saga BLM, was rejected because we did not make an appointment... -_-"
looked on its display unit, and my wife stepped into it, hold the steering for like 5 secs, came down of the car, and said let's get the chevy! I immediately agreed seeing how light the doors are on that proton and the smaller size it is and its known reputation for giving random quality built in their new cars...some engine caught fires after few days of driving I heard.....and proton will replace the whole car to compensate you to keep it low profile... LOL
so what da heck, $14k USD for a 1.5yrs chevy aveo in Malaysia it's still quite a good deal....only later on I find out how much fuel it consumes and the problems that comes with it....
But nonetheless it's still a comfy car, and as mentioned there was simply no other options for me to choose....so the aveo being low in 2nd hand resale value is the MAIN reason I got the car in the first place.... :p
Malaysia, that's where the ultra racing bars are made. I still haven't gotten mine that I ordered back in May. As for problems, mine is about 3 years old and i have only had the odometer screw up, and the serpentine belt has cut into the power steering line. It hasn't started leaking somehow, but I'm sure it will someday.
At least our 'clunker' is paid for!:p
i drive 550 km a week and payd 40$ a week in gas. i have 106000km and have spent no more then 2000$ on my car for parts. i pay 105$ for insurance. clunk this
I finally had to replace that power steering line. The Ultra racing bars prove to be a great investment everyday too.
I wish the link still worked
lol this is the best cheap car i ever bought.. its by far NOT my favorite but when something breaks... ill fix it... this is my second one i sold my first one cause i got 3 grand for it and only had 1700 in it... ill keep this one cause its a 5 speed and gets such awesome gas millage.. i give the car a 8 outta 10... pros, its a 2006, under a hundred thousand miles, 5 speed, o ya did i metion it gets 30+ miles to the gallon... cons, it looks like an egg, it has an ugly key.. haha those are not real cons... i love this little gas getter.
It is cheap and easy to work on. It's just slow, wich is probably a good thing for me.
Cheap and slow pretty much describes all of my cars. :D
I've been looking at used cars recently, and saw an Aveo sedan that was traded in at a local car lot, but it was already sold. Probably for a good price too.
This thread got me thinking about how biased people and particularly automotive journalists can be. Aveo is the #1 clunker? My '08 Wave is approaching 180,000Kms. No squeaks, no rattles, no major issues. The only repairs I have had to pay for, aside from maintenance items, has been 2 axle seals, a valve cover gasket and a battery. The car lives in an environment that ranges from -40 winters to dust bowl summers. It still has the original shocks/struts and brakes. It has been a great car and it even has some German DNA - Opel helped with some of the engineering. So into the shop comes a Mercedes B200 - the brand the "experts" call the epitome of automotive excellence. The car has 140,000Kms and needs 2 front wheel bearings, shocks/struts all around, 4 wheel brakes and a CV shaft worth $1300 my COST!!! This customer will spend more on repairs in one visit than I have spent in six and a half years of motoring. So remind me again, which car is the P.O.S?
^ Great illustration :D
Most auto journalists are incapable of properly reviewing entry-level cars. They need to be able to put away their "BMW yardsticks" and evaluate a car based on what it was designed to do: provide cheap A to B motoring. Most fail at this.
The thing is, no one reviews "cheap A to B" cars well. They are also very bias to american foreign built cars. The reviews of the aveo were all poor. The cruze and sonic are a little better even though thy are essentially the "same" korean cars they were designed to be, yet from my reading the Spark still gets bad marks..
I have been to a few (very few) car press release tests. It was a terrible experience. Everyone basically followed the most "knowledgeable" guy around and wrote what he said. Everyone was free to test every car and take it on the track. When the personal testing started they all headed to the corvette, (it was a gm product review). I am not even sure everyone (anyone) drove every car. And just like many reviews sound like poor plagiarism's over other reviews, most of the people just went with consensus and not personal impression.
It;s good that others see through the Aveo dogma marketing spin, at least here in the States.
My .2c;
I have only had my first Aveo a few months, (racked up about 2500 miles so far) but I have learned as much as I can about it. I came into ownership as a total noob. In this short amount of time, there has been no shortage of bad press, crazy stories of ownership, everything from ‘air bags don’t work’, ‘check engine light always on’, ‘riddled with recalls’ to ‘just bursts into flames while driving on road’. I have read all the fear mongering propaganda over at NHTSA about numerous recalls, one even claiming GM used ‘counterfeit control modules’, the attacks are almost endless. All marketing ploys IMO. Any magazine that has paying advertisers were written off for what they are, marketing illusions. Most of what I have read online has been laughable. The terms ‘claptrap’, ‘unsafe’ and ‘clown car’ are common in the media spin.
All over a car, that was (apparently) designed by none other than Giorgetto Giugiaro aka Italdesign in Moncalieri Italy, according to Wikipedia on the car, and has an engine with design roots at Opel/Vauxhall including head design work by Lotus early on. Not exactly a Yugo or Pinto from it’s engineering roots. – I think the only reason it picked up this dogma, is simply due to it’s “target market” of low cost (i.e. low profit margin for marketing budget line items) buyers.
IMO any car that gives good value to the owner, should not get much positive press, as this would be counter productive to move the hard to sell rigs off of lots. - In light of this, to touch on resale value, we have combed craigslist for a few weeks trying to find another Aveo for my girlfriend, and they have no problem selling for a grand or two above KBB, in fact two just sold in my tiny town well above any book value. To make a long story short, I now own two of these clap traps. :)
One benefit of the Aveo dogma is I think some amazing deals can be had out there. Some people actually buy into this crap, and dump their cars on the market for pennies on the dollar. and it does not seem to have an impact on selling prices for good runners.
my Local GM Dealer has a 2011 Summit White 2LT Sedan (or as I like to call it; SCOOTAPARTS!) on their used lot; and they are asking $14,561 if you walk onto their lot. I Purchased Scoots Right next door at my Local Nissan Dealer for $10,382.93 (I actually had to look at my Sales Paperwork I put in a Master Maintenance and Repair File I started that has all of my Dealership Invoices both Parts and Service)in January of 2012.
I have to add to this... first brand new car I ever bought was a 1989 Geo Metro... Only got it because I needed a commuter car and could not afford to drive my 1964 Nova that put out in the neighborhood of 400 horsepower, or May 1979 cutlass supreme that had a 350 horse sbc 350 to work and back 90mi every day, so I bought the Geo thinking that I would own it until I moved closer to my work, little did I know that this car would end up being the MOST reliable car I had / or will probably ever own, (24,000mi first year) 158000 miles later i never did anything to it not even the timing belt, which now I find out should have been replaced @ 100000 miles... and this was the car that everybody said was a POS and was a throwaway car and I would never be happy driving even with 13 inch Enkys I got INCREDIBLE gas mileage, and it held up extremely well when it was t-boned by a full-size Ford F 150 4x4.
I missed that car for many years until I bought the Aveo I own now 2005 blue hatchback 5 speed... Have owned it a month, I have really enjoyed driving in the two thousand miles I have on it so far..... thanks for all the guys on this forum that help everybody with their cars, I hope that I can be of help to people also.
