"Cash for Aveos!"
That's what the U.S. government could have nicknamed last year's Car Allowance Rebate System (CARS) program (commonly known as "Cash for Clunkers").
I was looking at sales of the Aveo for Jan-May of this year vs. Jan-May of last year. The numbers show a healthy increase for 2010 - so far the monthly numbers are consistently higher than last year's. (Recession recession go away!)
So I was briefly stumped by the fact that 2009's total sales were so much higher by year end than this year's are going to be (if you project an average sales rate through to December).
Then I looked at the monthly figures for all of 2009 and suddenly it all became clear - which you can see in the above graph.
Some numbers to put the Cash for Aveos! sales boost in perspective:
- 2,082 - average monthly sales for 2009, excluding July & August[/*:m:1ttl5db6]
- 4,961 - sales for July 2009[/*:m:1ttl5db6]
- 12,733 - sales for August 2009[/*:m:1ttl5db6]
- +138% - sales increase for July compared to the average[/*:m:1ttl5db6]
- +512% - sales increase for August compared to the average[/*:m:1ttl5db6]
Looking at the 2009 total sales:
- 38,516 - 2009 total sales (not counting Pontiac G3, by the way)[/*:m:1ttl5db6]
- 24,986 - 2009 estimated sales without Cash For Aveos! (12 mos. x 2,082 avg.)[/*:m:1ttl5db6]
- +54% - 2009 sales increase (est.) from the Cash for Aveos! program[/*:m:1ttl5db6]
During the program, you could have gotten a new Aveo5 for as little as $7,185 US (but probably lower).
Did anyone here do it??
