The 3 Series just happens to be a mid-size luxury sport coupe, same as a Monte Carlo. I actually have a photo from an article Car and Driver did comparing the RWD Ford Thunderbird to the FWD 3.4L Monte Carlo in 1997. No mention of FWD being a handicap.
