FB shows retooling of Orion, MI factory where next gen Aveo will be built

      This is kind of cool:

Someone in GM management (I'm assuming it's management) is using FB to post progress reports, pics and video about the retooling of the Orion Assembly factory in Orion Township, Michigan where the next gen Aveo will be made:

e.g. "Skillet Line takes shape in Orion's Trim Shop. Installation by the Orion Assembly UAW 5960 Skilled Trades Group"

They've currently got "754 People Like This" on their wall. I'm betting a lot of those are people who are laid off and waiting to be called back. Lots of comments like "Git R done!" and "Ready, willing and able".

And here are some interesting tidbits from an article about the Orion plant:

GM has said the Orion plant, which is retooling ahead of a 2011 launch, will be able to make as many as 160,000 vehicles on two shifts. But analysts expect demand for the Aveo, which will have a five-door hatchback and four-door sedan, will require only 60,000 to 70,000 units annually.

GM has said it hopes to sell its new small cars with more content to make them more profitable, but no one knows whether consumers will go along. For instance, the current Aveo had an average transaction price of $13,887 from July 2009 to June 2010, according to price researcher TrueCar.
Of note: The Aveo will be the smallest vehicle produced in the United States.

I think the reason for such a high output is for import markets as well as possible rebadges. Given GM's current tune, I can almost see the next Aveo being available as a Buick also. Buick's entry level car at the moment is the Regal.
      - 1995 Chevrolet Monte Carlo Z34 - LQ1 3.4L DOHC 24 valve semi-hemi V6, 210 HP, 215 ft-lbs of torque, 4T60e 4 speed automatic with O/D.... 123,000+ miles. Slowly resto-modding it.
      - looking for a first gen Aveo for a daily driver :D

Korea is producing the cars for the rest of the world.

Buick has an awd suv type vehicle prototype based on the new aveo if the content here is correct.

I just linked to their FB icon. Should be OK now.

      ---

      They updated again.

I get a kick out of it - it's a cool way to keep in touch with the production & management staff on the progress. Not to mention the people interested in the next gen car.
