The car was indeed running when the serp belt broke and it wrapped itself around the alternator pulley. To my knowledge the timing belt was never changed by my sister in law who owned the car before us. Also the belt spins nice and straight with proper tension although I wonder if I tightened the pulley too much when I put it on after getting the tensioner in place. I haven't checked the codes due to the CEL being off but I'm going to have them checked today.
