Along with what rabbit said, at the dealership we find it useful sometimes to spray and play. Spray the latch. Pull the emergency release tight. And use the palm of your hand to make decent impacts on the plastic. Being that it could be stuck? A little brute force and spray should do it.

this has me thinking that his Aveo MAY Have been in a Rear End Collision, and its Jammed the Latch shut.
