air conditioner not blowing cold on 2009 Aveo LT5 automatic

Have owned car since new. Only 13,xxx miles. Well maintained. Just finished a 260mile drive at typical 65-70mph cruising speed with the a/c on a cold setting. (Have done this drive before in 2013, 2012, 2011 during summer vacation.) The car sat for three days without use and then when started for the drive home it will not blow cold air only ambient temperature.

Chevrolet examined the vehicle and indicates compressor and rod need to be replaced and the cost is $1800!!! I find it hard to believe as the vehicle has so few miles and normally driven only at 35-40mph speeds except or our annual road trips.

I read a few threads and note this has happened to a few folks in hot weather states like myself.

Was this due to driving duration, speed and a/c setting?

How much labor time does GM charge on an Aveo for compressor and rod replacement? What does the book say?
I think I am being hosed as it is crazy hot here now in our city.

Ok do it click when you turn it on (the compressor clutch) if it does not it might be the compressor or the wire or plug. make sure your wire and plug to the compressor are not broken or unplugged. If the wires good tested good and plugged in.( fuse is ok) then its the compressor . If it clicks when turned on compressor it's working. you could have a leak in the system.

I was quoted from GM $1200 for a compressor and expansion valve on my 11 Aveo5. You can get a remanufactured compressor for maybe 150-250 bucks and do it yourself.
