Anyone with a rusting exhaust system?

Haven't had to deal with rusty exhaust pipes for many years, and thought they were history. But apparently not on our Aveos My 2005 sprung a leak just above the clamp on the input pipe attached to the muffler. After checking the various pipes, I see lots of rust, and expect to see other sections having problems in the near future. I'll just throw on a temp fix to get by for now, but am also considering what to do for the long-term. I'm thinking I probably should just go ahead and replace everything from the flex pipe on back, even though the muffler itself doesn't look bad. The access to the hangers look to be ok, and it doesn't seem like an ugly job (I'm probably going to regret saying that half way into the job). Has anyone gone through this yet on an early Aveo?

i know a few people who have replaced exhausts for one reason or another. But my potential solution for you would be (since your talking flex pipe back) would be to get an exhaust from a 2009 or newer. Apparently in 2009 GM started using stainless for their exhausts on the aveo.

Hey Rabbit, thanks for the helpful suggestion - wasn't aware of that, and so obviously never was even on my radar. Looking at the GM parts diagrams for '09 and '05, the pipes and muffler appear to be the same size and shape, but I need to somehow confirm that. I certainly would be game for trying to find a complete '09+ exhaust system from a U-pull, if everything was an exact fit. But without access to a lift, I'm not up for trying to make mods with my face about an inch away from the frame

the best way to figure this out, might be a used parts interchange catalog, or comparing aftermarket parts numbers.

if monroe uses the same mid pipe and tailpipe/muffler on both years. then the exhaust is compatible.

the only section i can say is most likely different is the down pipe. but even the cat looks like it ends and has close to the same flange.
