      Automatic transmission problem

Okay, I have a 04 Aveo base model hatchback. It runs and drives, but there's a bad vibration and noise. I thought it was a wheel bearing, but upon further inspection, I noticed that the axles are loose in the transmission. I was told that it was the output shaft bearings. Now I have worked on cars for over 20 years, but I try to stay clear of transmissions. Has anybody else heard of this? And if so, how can it be fixed, and at what cost? Thanks, Adam

Are you certain the problem is not a bad C/V joint?

Yeah, I've replaced plenty of those. It's where the axle goes into the transmission. I thought it slipped out at first, but they're both locked in. But if you grab the side connected to the trans you can wiggle it around. I've never seen anything like it before. It's not leaking fluid either, so I assume the seals are still good. Just the bearings where the axle goes in are worn out or broken. That's my guess anyway. I don't know what the inside of the trans looks like. As I said, I've worked on cars for over 20 years. I just avoid transmissions. Maybe I need to just tear it apart and see if I can do anything with it. It's already messed up, so what can it hurt?

I've never seen that problem reported in the past, but I guess there's a first time for everything. And I've never been into the transmission on ours so I can't offer you any help either. But good luck with it, and I hope you get it back on the road soon.

Take it to a transmission shop (if you can get a free estimate) and see if they can tell you what the problem is.
