I am thinking of draining my automatic transmission fluid and replacing the filter. The cheapest replacement filter that I can find is $60. That is a lot of money for a filter. Can the old filter be cleaned and reused?

Wow! What an oversight. I can't believe that I didn't include the year in my original post. I too have a 2005 Aveo LS. So, I guess that there is no filter to replace. Now, I've got to go back to www.rockauto.com and find out why they have a filter listed for my car. Thanks for the info.
the "filter" listed on rock auto seems to be a combination pick up tube, baffle, and screen. I would just clean it and put it back in (if it comes out, might be a snapped in part?)
disclaimer: i drive manual cars.
Thanks. I will let you know what I find when I drop the pan. I have done this maintenance on previous cars (not Aveos) that I have owned and have always replaced the filter along with the drained fluid. In those cases, though, the filters were "reasonably" priced.
I would prefer to have a manual transmission myself. Why don't I? I did my daughter a favor and bought her Aveo when she moved away.
I finally got around to servicing my transmission. It cost me about $90 in parts. What a messy job! I wonder what a shop would have charged? I dropped the transmission pan, cleaned it out (including the two magnets), changed the filter/screen (because I did not know how to judge its condition), changed the pan gasket, and added about 3 quarts of transmission fluid. If I ever do it again, I will get a bigger catch pan to collect the old fluid and I will try to service the filter/screen instead of replacing it. At 67 I feel that I am getting too old for this do it yourself approach to life.

good to hear it all went well
just curious why so messy?drain bolt at bottom empties fluid into pail, then drop the pan.did more fluid come out when you pulled the filter?did you use gm iv or toyota iv fluid.90.oo in parts is a good price i would think. also 2.5 quartes is just what the pan holds so the rest is about 6 quartes in the converter which means you have about 33-40% good fluid verses old.have any pics of the filter new or old.appreciate you sharing your experiences with this.i am 41 and hope i can still crawl under there when im 67 thats amazing!!!!happy new year.
What happened? I just wrote a long, detailed post and it disappeared. I hope that I don't have to write it again.
