I have a 2005 Aveo 5 and I'm going to inspect the front suspension tonight. Do the Aveo's have a ball joint wear indicator (visual) or this just done by feel (grabbing top and bottom of tire with front end jack off the ground)?
Thanks :blob3:

Your best bet is to check it by moving the tire manually.
Okay - I figured out that it isn't the ball joint. Its the lower control arm thats loose. Can the bushing be replaced, or does the whole arm have to be replaced?
you can do just the joint or bushing, but compares prices and what tools you have available..
I have a sound in the front that sounds like brakes are grinding, it gets louder when I move the wheel to the right, but the brakes are fine. I was wondering if it was the axle or ball joint but now after reading this thread it seems It could be the bushings too. Every things seems tight, so I am kind of at a loss. any ideas?
could be wheel bearings, or cv joints.
Best way to check and figure out which is it? Just pull it apart or?
the wheel bearings will allow the wheel to wobble, just it up and secure the suspension (not to mistake suspension movement for wheel wobble) and then try pulling the wheel in out, up down etc.. do it again without the rim to verify.. if the hub moves, you need bearings..
cv joint the only inspect you can do is if the boots are torn or leaking. otherwise, put the car in neutral, turn the wheel lock to lock with your hand on the joint and feel for clicking or jerks in the joint. Try turning them over by hand while they are straight, turned fully either way. and feel for clicks, binds etc.
I'm pretty sure that you just need to feel it and if in case there is a wear indicator it will be much easier to detect. but most of the old version of that car for sure they don't have, nowadays they just added it or rather you need to buy like a heavy duty ball joint wear indicator at the store.

As an update, I had to change the complete lower arms. Couldn't find the bushings. Ball joints were still okay, but I replaced them as they came with the arms.
I can't find any problems with the wheel bearings - I tried pushing, pulling, etc. I spun the wheels and the cv joints sound good too.
The passenger wheel does seem to have some play at the tie rod ends, but the outer tied rod seems fine. The play seems to come from inside the boot at the inner tie rod. Are these replaceable? I see them listed on RockAuto and O'Reilly's, but not at GM
according to Gm it is not serviceable, however like you said rockauto etc list them, thats where most of the posts stopped. people saying they were going to order those, and never reporting back if it indeed works.
I know - screwy. I think I'll send an e-mail to the manufacturers (Moog), etc and see whats up.
In my 2005 Aveo Service Manual, it shows how to check for play in the inner Tie Rod (at its ball joint?):

And how to install the inner tie rod:

I took the car in for another alignment today. The tech commented on a failing strut and a loose stabilizer bar link, but no mention of a loose tie rod.
had the same problems. just changed my bearings and now it is fine. holding the wheels on top and bottom did not show a bearing was bad only when they were pressed out. i am using the bearings from a daewoo racer. lots cheaper
