I tried to change the cabin air filter (as described by filterheads.com on You Tube) but there is nothing in the black box behind the glove compartment. Does anyone have any ideas why there is no air blowing? Makes driving on a rainy day tough.

my brother had this problem in his 08 chevy cobalt, somewhere behind the dash the pipe got disconnected and caused the exact same problem your describing, his musta been one in a million maybe your experiencing the same thing
Also check the cable that selects which vents the air comes out of. Then confirm that its is shutting and opening the appropriate doors in the HVAC system. You may have a cable that isn't retained properly and therefore not moving the control doors.
The cables are all working but the control door directly over the blower fan had let go so it is blocking all air flow. The dealer said 8 hours to diagnose, we took the dash off ourselves in 2 hours. The part is $500. Today we will search the local scrap yards and on-line. We will keep you posted.
did you check to see if the missing filter is a clog in the system?
does air bow out on any setting? either set on the heat, ac, or vent, windshield, floor?
you hear the fan motor correct? with the dash apart can you feel the air blowing out somewhere its not supposed to? does the air draw in?
you dont need to replace the hvac unit, just the part at fault, which could be cheap.
I do hear the fan motor. The part number is 96887300(heater-module (s/vent & w/rr duct)) on the GM site. I only need the flap which is inside this part.
Got the part at the scrap yard for $25! Now its re-assemble time and we will let you know if we get air.
2 hours and it's back together and we have air, heat, defrost!! Thank goodness because it is 8 degrees today! Thank you to the aveo forum !
I have a problem with my cobalts climate control panel. It wont switch the direction of the flow to the window all the time and it always switches back to the main vent. The A/C works just fine by the way. I bought a new climate control panel and it worked great right away, for about a day before it went out. Anyone know what could be the cause. I even replaced a HVAC resistor even though I doubt it had anything to do with it.
