      Blower Motor Noise on Windshield

      Hey guys,
so my blower motor only makes this gargling noise when I change the air direction onto windshield...it sounds like an old fan from the 1800s, and no its not leafs, I've opened the blower motor and completely cleaned it, and only happens when I put it on the windshield...any insight?

You may have cleaned the motor/blower, but there could be something vibrating in the defrost/windshield duct itself.

Hey MetroMPG. Thanks for your reply.

This sound is really starting to annoy me. It cannot be the duct, as I have vacuumed the ducts completely, and also the sound that I'm hearing does not sound like something stuck that is playing around in the duct. Maybe I should have explained the sound better:

As soon as I put the air flow to the windshield/defrost direction, I can hear the condenser click on, and it almost sounds like a secondary fan/blower kicks on at the same time and it sounds faulty, like something (perhaps debris and dust) is blocking its flow. Imagine making a really deep noise with your mouth into the face of a fan...that's my attempt at explaining it best.

I'm wondering is there another fan or blower motor besides the main one at the passenger's kick panel area, that I'm not aware off?

This is really bugging me, and I would like to fix it before the weather gets any colder, so any input would be appreciated guys.

Aha - yes. When set to defrost, the A/C comes on (regardless of temperature setting -- A/C acts as a dehumidifier, aiding the defrost setting). Could it be the A/C fan in the engine compartment you're hearing?

Yes I think this may be it, do you know where abouts I can find this fan? I've looked everywhere in the engine compartment but I can't seem to find it, is it accessible?

That's the electric fan in front of the engine on the radiator.

What do you mean it's not?

That fan turns on when the A/C compressor kicks in. It pulls air across the radiator & condenser. There is no other fan in the engine bay on these cars.

If you can find another fan in the engine bay and explain what it does I would be more than happy to listen, but I don't think you're going to find one.

wolfforlunch: to clarify, some cars have 2 electric fans in the engine bay: one for the radiator, one for the air conditioner condenser.

I wasn't sure if the Aveo had 1 or 2, so Andrew's not pulling your leg. If it's just 1, that single fan comes on when the front defrost setting is switched on.

It's a single fan, I have had my front grille out in the past (bad hood sensor) and there isn't a secondary fan. Just a single large fan on the engine side of the radiator.

I was trying to decided when I replied if you were simply saying that it wasn't causing the sound, or if you simply thought I was pulling your leg.

Fun Fact: My grandmother on my Mom's side had a Malibu that had two smaller fans side by side to be more efficient, but they were still both next to each other on the engine side.

      Hope that clarifies.
