For the last 2-3 months, I have had an issue with getting my auto aveo out of park, sometimes when I press in the brake pedal, it does not release the lock to get the shifter to move out of park, I have to sit there and press down on the pedal 20-30 times sometimes to get it to unlock and shift into any other gear. Anyone else ever had this issue? I may just go to the dealer as it is still under warranty but if it is an adjustment I can make myself I would rather avoid the dealership.
go to the dealer if your still under warranty at least they can tell you what's wrong and then you can go from there.
Mine has a key operated release just in front of the selector quadrant, need to remove the rubber plug. I park and start in neutral... you will need to rotate the image, its my scanner...

That corner piece that comes up in the corner of the plate? Ill have to check it out, I never knew what that thing did :D

I had this same shifting issue for the past year or so, it was driving me nuts!
It finally got to the point where the brake lights wouldn't work, even if I could shift the car out of park. Turns out, its a little switch under the dash that goes bad. This switch is set up to sense the brake pedal position, which is essential for both the park shift interlock as well as brake light application.
This is apparently a pretty common problem. I have an 08 aveo, and the NHTSA TSB number for that year for this problem is 10027913.
I had a local mechanic replace the switch, only took an hr and a half, and about $60. The dealership wanted to charge me about $120, but since I have an extended warranty it would only have been $100 deductible. Still, the local guy was cheaper, so I went with him. Ironically, same local guy is quoting me more $$ to replace my timing belt vs. the dealership. So the dealer will still get some of my business.
Your regular warranty ran out already? I have the exact same problem, I am going to take it over to the dealer and have them change it out, I am just about out of my warranty so I need to do it soon :D
If i am out of warranty (i have 55000 miles only, but the 3 years may be up) I will just take it down to my local shop where they are already doing my timing belt and have them do it, what are they charging you for timing belt servicing? The dealer is usually higher than a regular repair shop, unless the mechanic doe not want to work on it.
The normal warranty is 3 yrs or 36000 miles. I bought my 08 in October of 07, and hit 36K well before the 3 years was up (I was driving 250+ miles every weekend to visit my girlfriend, now wife, when I was in college... lol). My dad insisted I get the 5yr/75K extended warranty, which is fine and all, but it has a $100 deductible, and the only 2 problems I've had have cost less than that to fix, so I haven't made a claim to the warranty. I now have just over 55k on the car, and I'm gonna get the timing belt replaced here within the next 2 weeks or so. I found out that if you don't get the timing belt replaced before 60k, you can kiss that extra 15k of warranty goodbye if the belt fails. So I'm just gonna get it done soon to prevent that issue. :-)
The local guy wanted around $315 for labor, not including parts, which were going to run around another $100 for belt, tensioner, etc. The dealer quoted me ~$350, but I'm going to call and double check that price on Monday.
Just got a ticket for no brake lights today :(
Ill have to call chevy up tomorrow and see when they can fix it, hopefully by the end of the week. All I have to do is get it fixed and show up at the court date to show them it was fixed, or pay $116 :O
im sure your dealer will have no problem fixing your aftermarket LED taillights.
Do you think it will be a problem? It is not the taillights, but that damn swtich, when I can not shift out of park, the brake lights do not turn on as well. Do not really have a choice though, got to fix that switch one way or another :D
Dealer wants $320 to fix two parts that I have never heard of, called up my local shop and he said neutral safety switch in five seconds, I will take it down there and have them fix/change that switch, and also the timing service as well. Hopefully I make it there without any more tickets, going to a courthouse 3 hours one way is not going to be fun if I have to do it more than one time...

I am going to have someone drive behind me tomorrow, and my shop will probably just tow it back to their shop. I turn on my lights when I brake, but if I have someone behind me I should be fine (only 2 miles to the dealer on back-roads, but you never know).
Show the cop the ticket you already have, and inform them that you are on the way to get it fixed, They shouldn't ticket you twice for the same problem. I'm guessing since the dealer wants to charge your warranty is up. The aftermarket tails will not affect the warranty, unless you cut into the harness before they tied into the lights.
The switch is only covered under the 36000/3 year warranty so it would not matter, but the taillights are plug in play so no cutting or anything. A lot of the car is only covered under the 36000/3 year warrenty it seems, I thought it was 60000/5 year on most of the parts but nothing can be done about it, no reason to complain. But yeah, if I were to get pulled over, I would show them the ticket for sure, I just do not want to be put in that situation but I should be good to go. It is just a pain in the ass, it may just be easier to pay the $116 and call it a day, I wouldn't doubt the court date would fall on a BIG test day. And I am sick :p

I just can not wait to get back to Tampa and start the new school year, and the car being fixed and timing belt service finished will be nice.
Gee, haven't been here in a while since dumping the Aveo, but cruising thru I saw this thread. This too was one of the many problems I had with my Aveo.
If it makes you feel any better the switch is part # 96874572 and costs about 6 bucks online, maybe 12 at the dealer and takes less than 5 minutes to install. The hardest part is getting under the dash. No tools required to install.
Whoever charged 1.5 hours to install is a criminal.
Thanks for the part number, that looks like the right part. That is one of the two parts the dealer wanted to change for that stupid amount of money o, I think I will order one and give it a shot. I do apologize for any "past" things said between us as well. Anyways, what did you end you getting?
The switch is really simple to install. Just unclip the plug, twist the switch 90 degrees and remove it. Then same thing insert new switch, twist 90 degrees to lock it and connect the plug. done.
FWIW, I got a 2011 civic. I couldn't pass up the deep discounts and 0.9% financing.
I traded the 2008 Aveo SVM with 105K miles, CEL on, bad rear axel clunking and got $1500 for it. Other than the mechanical issues, it was super clean.
That is not too bad really, at least they took it off you. Looks like kbb says around $2400 trade in, if you would have kept it, you would have had timing belt servicing coming up as well for $500-600 (looks like you drive a lot of miles if you bought it new).
But yeah, I ordered the part online for $7, does look easy to change, but a bitch to get under the dash to get to it :D
