It's called the coil pack, made up of four ignition coil. They tend to fail rather than deteriorate, and if one of the coils fails, you will know because one spark plug will not fire. No real performance gains to be had in a stock engine, and one would really need to replace all components (plugs, wires and coils) to realize an improvement in either MPG or performance.
