electric power consumption during overnight parking?

Hi everyone,

I need a community help. Almost a year ago I had battery drain problem and now it happen again, but this time I don't have any error codes. So I'm not 100% sure is it electric issue or just a dead battery.

Just after I've pressed lock button the drain current is about 2Amps and during next minute or two it slowly goes down to 0.2Amp. I seams to me that 0.2Amp is a little bit high, because my Kia drains about 0.001Amp after alarm goes on.

Can somebody measure 2009 Aveo5 drain current and post it here? Thank you in advance.

Only standard useless OnStar tracker (it has it's own 16v Lithium-ion battery under front passenger seat) . I've disconnected lithium - no difference. Drain current is the same - 0.2Amps. Does anybody know where is OnStar module located?

Radio is acting normal. It saves and restores station, volume level and ect like it should.

Maybe 0.2Amp is normal for 2009 Aveo5? Maybe it's a dead battery? Can somebody measure 2009 Aveo5 drain current and post it here? Thank you in advance.

Try pulling the OBD fuse and check to see if that reduces the draw.

You think that MCU dosen't go to sleep?

I agree. Start pulling fuses to see what is drawing power. 200mA does seem on the high side.

That's the fuse which protects the Onstar circuit.

I've localize the problem - it's the dashboard. When I pull out cluster/room fuse the current dropped to 0.003Amp. Now I need to fix it. Going to do it on weekend. Will keep you informed.

Well, I'm stuck. Looks like the dashboard controls a lot of stuff in the car - radio, clock lamps & etc. I has two connector - green and blue. Green is the input power, and outputs signal for enable/disable radio, clock... Blue one, as far as I understand, is input signals from doors, sensors, buttons...

- When blue cable is disconnected - power consumption remains the same - 0.2Amp.
- When green cable is disconnected - consumptions drops to 0.003Amp.
- When two cables are plugged in and doors are locked - clock is off, radio is disabled & doesn't react on the power button. When doors are unlocked - clock is on, radio react on power button.

The main dashboard controller - MC9S12HZ256VAL . According to the datasheet it's power consumption is 0.065Amp in normal mode and 0.0048Amp during the sleep.

Something else eats 0.2 - 0.065 = 0.135Amp. Any ideas? Does any body have dashboard pinout?

Have you checked to see what a new cluster costs? If its cheap, it might be worth it to just replace it and see if that fixes it.

I think instead of buying parts with no season the cheapest way will be to sell the car & never buy a chevy again. :) It's my first chevy and I'm 99.9% sure that it's my last one. The 0.01% is for - never say never.

I've started reverse engineering of Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC). The battery connected to Green connector pin 24 through Cluster/Room Lamp fuse. First 20-30 seconds the cluster controller MC9S12HZ256VAL tests(calibrates???) speed/tacho/temp/fuel gauges (teeny-tiny step motors) and turns them off. For some reason the fuel gauge stays on (controllers doesn't go to sleep and keep fuel gauge step motor on).

Chevy engineers wired analog fuel tank sensor to Engine Control Module (ECM) and than ECM sends digital signal via data link (assume it's slow CAN bus) to Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC).

Now the question - it doesn't go to sleep because it's not receiving correct digital signal? Because MC9S12HZ256VAL is damaged? Because some over green/blue pins have to be pull to ground or to Vcc to activate sleep mode?

Any help would be much appreciated.

The behavior changed, after I connected all cables and locked the doors - speed/tacho/temp/ stay energized and fuel gauge is off.

I'm lost.

My uncle had issues with his digital dash readout in his Volvo. I was able to fix it by resoldering the tabs on the larger chips on the circuit board. It apparently is a fairly common issue with those instrument clusters. I couldn't see any bad joints visually, but by putting my iron on each one, it fixed the issue. With intermittent problems, I wouldn't be too surprised if this was the case. The Aveo clocks have similar issues.

Well, Daox you were absolutely right - it was bad contact between dashboard controller & pcb. After I've re-soldered all 112 pins everything went to normal. Now consumption is ~0.0001Amp.

I've also found an easter egg - part of the screen is covered by the label. Chevy doesn't want competition between aveo and pontiac g3 wave, so they cover the screen to make it looks cheaper.
I've cut a bigger window, looks better now.

Nice find on the free cluster upgrade too haha. You should post a new thread about that so more people know. They won't find it in this thread most likely.

There is also a push button on the board to switch modes: avr. fuel consumption etc., but it covered by plastic body. I've parallel two buttons with wire and it works. Now I can switch the modes with one button.

I'm tired to make a new post. Can you do it?

This cluster upgrade has been brought up. If you add the button you would also be able to cycle through a few of the functions.

Amazing that GM would be so "cheap" but still include it in the build.

I didn't add the button. All buttons are on the board from factory. First button is the one we all using, and second is covered by plastic (like lcd screen). I've paralleled buttons with wire. It is not an easy task, because the buttons pads are on the over side of the board and to get there you need to unsolder the screen. Now by pressing first button dashboard thinks that I'm pressing both at the same time and changes the modes. For modes description google for pontiac g3 wave manual. If you want ambient temp on the screen you need to trace wires from green connector pin26 and connect NTC Thermistor.
