you could put a can of sea foam in the fuel tank while car is at half tank to clean the sending unit.
i tend to not like miracle cure all products. But this seems like it could be the rheostat could be bad. But you would want to check the signal to it is steady.
it also has a small delay time. IF you sit overnight on a hill for instance, it will take a minute or two for the car to raise the gauge to the proper level. Not entirely sure how that works, baffling, electronics, etc (different cars use different methods) but its so the fuel gauge doesn't read full every time you go down a hill and empty every time you go up a hill like the older cars did..
This is due to your fuel level sending unit in the tank being faulty mine did it the other, day after i filled up, it went so low that the idiot light (low fuel warning light) came on and then went back up, i then checked my ultra gauge to see what code it had sent, cant remember the code right now but it came back to fuel level sender high input or something similar which means it needs replacing, as i use my ultra gauge for fuel level i will just ignore it. i cleared the code and continued on.
yup your float is jacked up and its a modular system. so u will need to replace ur fuel pump.. bout 400 bucks from autozone
if u have emissions u u need to replace the pump because u will fail cel test
