      Grinding noise

Today I was driving home from work, and I started to hear a terrible grinding noise from the front driver's side wheel. I put the car up on the ramps, rolled underneath, and found a metal plate rubbing on the inside of the rotor. I know my brakes are reaching the end of their lives, but this thing isn't a brake pad. It's just a metal plate. Anyone know what the deal is here?

is it the backing plate of the pad, with no pad left? when bonded pads get below 2mm they can heat up enough to unglue them selves and disintegrate.

      Re: Grinding noise

Interestingly enough, the grinding has stopped. It definitely isn't the backing of a pad, since I haven't noticed a change in braking power. I'd be willing to believe it's a guard of some kind. After work tomorrow I'll put it back up on the ramps and snag a picture. Thanks for the help so far.

Mine was making a noise like that for about 30 minutes a couple weeks ago and it was just a rock stuck in my brakes.

Same problem here every once in awhile. Maybe it's the design of the wheel well but mine sucks up rocks and they get stuck in between the pads.
