Hole in mid-pipe of exhaust

Recently, the several inches long mid-pipe, which connects the aftermarket muffler to the underneath of the car, started having visibly large holes on the upper part. I had a welder replace that pipe and re-welded. Ever since then, the sound of the muffler has been clearly smoother -- back to when it used to originally be I believe. However, I could feel some air being emitted from where the pipe was newly welded although no abnormal sound could be heard nor could any hole be noticed or felt. I informed the supervisor where I had the welding job done and he said that as long as I don't hear any "vibrating noise" it is normal. I don't hear anything out of the ordinary, so should I be concerned?

its still a leak, just not as large of a leak.

i usually end up "boogering" up my welds on exhausts to get no air blowing out of the joints.

Lolz! :kermit: How do you mean "boogering up"? coz I've started picturing it literally in my head! :D I've read about muffler tapes -- any comment on that?

not have a clean looking weld because you tack over any spot that blows air..?

some tapes are "ok" but i would probably attempt jb weld or something you can smear around the weld.

Just had quite possibly the most frightening drive ever: after having the exhaust checked for a leak, which resulted in a schedule for a re-welding, the car kept stalling as the RPMs dropped below 1000 even on neutral! So I had to treat the car like an F1 car to keep the engine running at no less than 1000 RPMs, forcing me in low gears with noisy revs!

^ i think boogering is best. had leaks on my honda, hated it jb weld and the tape didnt work. just made a big mess. and vids of muffler?

No vids of the muffler yet... Same shop that did the welding will have it re-welded... not sure what technique would be applied but they may "booger" up the welds...

i tend to only need to do the while its on the car and i am laying under it.. if the pipes are out of accessible, then i can seal it with a nice bead.

I can tell you what will work if an exhaust pipe is straight and has a hole in it: high heat type silicone rubber. However, before you put it on, you must have a pre-cut piece of thin metal that will fit over the area. Slather the perforated area with the high-temp silicone goo, than place the metal patch on and secure it tightly in place with two hose clamps. The repair will hold - but don't be surprised if the pipe rots out somewhere else along its length.
