      Unhappy Major issues

So My 2004 Aveo 5, has 164,000 ish km on it so changed the water pump, timing and serpentine belt kits on it. (the last timing belt blew and the head was replaced on warranty. So glad I got the extended warranty.) Anyways, a few days later I went on a road trip. About 2 hours in, the oil light came on so we went to pull over, the check engine and battery lights came on and the engine died. It turns out the thermostat housing blew out, and we lost all of the antifreeze. The oil was burnt but we didn't appear to have lost a whole lot. The car got towed home, and there we tried to start it. It cranks over but won't fire, and it appears to have little compression. We will be checking the timing, and valves, but I figured that I would ask for suggestions for what to check. Also has anyone had issues with the thermostat housing cracking? It is plastic and split along the seam.

Did the temp gauge move at all? That is too bad though, the extended warrenty you had ran out?

Anyways, you can get a metal replacement for $50 or so, the plastic ones do not break a whole lot but it happens, I have a 07 and it had a metal one stock.

I hope it did not seize up.

so the engine got pretty overheated, as the thermostat housing melted in the block and the camshaft cover is warped. so we are looking for a new engine.
Any suggestions on what to get?

An 04-06 engine is a direct swap and would be your best bet. Depending on where you live, it may be cheaper to just sell the car and buy something else, but that depends on a lot of things. 07-08 engines need some minor things to be swaped, but if you stick with 04-06 it will be easier overall.

Yeah I live in the prairies of Canada, and my dad is trained as a mechanic. We were also wondering if when the engine is swapped, will the odometer be read from the new engine?
