Question about timing belt and water pump

Hey everyone, a few quick questions

      1) I have been reading that there is a problem with the timing belt breaking prematurely, but information seems to reference models before 2008. Since I have a 2008, should i just disregard this information and replace the timing belt @ 60K miles?

      2) If my timing belt breaks prematurely (before 60K miles), does my warranty (100K power train) cover this issue?

      3) It seems those who replace the timing belt also replace the water pump, is this needed? Also, is there anything else I should worry about/replace when I replace the timing belt @ 60K miles? Currently our used 2008 Aveo5 has around 43K miles.

      Thanks!

      1) In 2006, GM issued a memo to disregard the 30k inspection and to warranty any breakage before 60K.

      2) See number 1.

      3) You don't need to replace the water pump. It would be covered under the 100K warranty but for peace of mind you can replace it.

I think if the belt breaks, then they charge you for parts but labor is free? Someone ran into the problem, but the belt should last more than 60k in most cases, but it is risky, I wil be changing mine soon.

replace the water pump, its a "wear" item and your taking everything infront of it off anyhow.. thats like digging to the door of a pyramid, but not opening the door..

Ask your dealer for written proof if/when the belt breaks if you are covered. even with a 100k powertrain, the fine print says you need to do maintenance, like oil changes for example, and probably timing belts.

And 2008 has the etecII so yes.

I have a 2005 1.6l and in my owners manual it suggested to replace the timing belt at 60k. I did mine around 70k. It was suggested to me (at the advice of other forums) to use a gates brand timing belt which I did and replace the water pump , idler pulley and belt tensioner as well. The extra parts looked and felt ok to me but I replaced them anyway because if any of the parts would fail it will cause the new belt to fail and will cause the same damage.

Some advice; I have a service manual which for the most part have step by step instruction on doing this but my manual did fail to say to remove the front motor mount and you need to do this to get the belt off. The manual also states that you will need a 41mm dawoo water pump wrench. I did look at buying one but they were expensive so i made my own ahead of time but with the front engine mount removed it looked to me that you can get a regular wrench on the pump. ( WARNING!! I used my home made wrench for this task and did not this prove this theory out )

GOOD LUCK hope this helps you out

I replaced my belt at 77k and the thing I hate about the Aveo timing belt is your have to turn the water pump thats why they suggested you replace the water pump but when me and my friend changed my belt we did change out the water pump and it was fine. I also have a question since Aveos have the ecotec in them now do they still have a timing belt or did they go to a chain finally
