I was facing the same issue in my Aveo, what I did was once entering the car tried to free the internal knob (rod which pushes down to lock and pulls up to unlock) by rapidly opening and closing for 5-6 times. After this exercise, the issue had been resolved.
Saved me time and money to visit servicing center.
lol, rabbits post made perfect sense. Pull the door panel off, hook a voltage tester up to the locking mech. Hit lock button on remote. If you get voltage, problem is the actuator. If you dont, then it is a problem with the reciever in the car. And based on the fact that you said you can lock all the doors by turning the key in the door, leads me to believe the problem is in the reciever.
Like wylee said, look for the alarm module and clean and grease the connectors
