Has anyone had a problem with putting thier 5-speed into reverse and hearing a clunking/grinding noise and then it goes into gear? is this normal? I find it only happens once in a while, more often whenthe car is cold.
If it hels i have an 05 Aveo hatch 5speedwith only 19,000kms

On my auto I rarly hear a clunking noise, sometimes on my truck too, guess its normal. If its annoying you, put on the biggest fart can known to man, or turn up the speakers :P Wont hear a thing!
If its fighting you to go in, dont force it, put the stick to neutral, put the clutch in a few times and try again. Its just the syncros arent perfectly aligned-I think.
if i recall correctly, transmissions dont have synchros to go into reverse and therefore it may not always transition smoothly into and out reverse. Its a common trait of manual transmissions due to their mechanics. So dont worry there's nothing wrong with the car. But as stated earilier just enagge the clutch in neutral and maybe blip the throttle once. and that may help in syncing the gears
ya i get this too.
its only if i have my steering wheel turned. if i straighten it out then it just slips in to gear.

I get that problem sometimes but I just put it down to the characteristics of the car. I'll live with it until it becomes an issue! I'd say the problems with the clutch and not the box but I wouldn't worry about it if it only happens now and again.
Come to a complete stop, then just before going into reverse, gently push the lever as if you want first gear, but just enough to stop the gears from turning. You don't need to go fully into first, (or fifth, as I don't know the shift pattern for our Aveo's) just push a little. This will make going into reverse really easy and you shouldn't hear or feel any grinding. With practice, you'll feel this is second nature. I learned this when I drove a Sprite with a non-syncro first. At a stop, when the light turns green, I'd pull gently into second, then up to first. No more clunking. Hope this helps everyone.
Yep. 4th gear works to.
If I've been rolling and just stopped and I know reverse is going to grind...I just pop it in 4th gear really quick..(clutch in as usual) then just go to reverse.
If reverse still seems blocked, go to first and move forward a tiny bit. then reverse should slip in fine.
My dad always uses reverse gear like a "parking brake". He puts it in gear and lets the transmission keep the car from rolling. Is this really a good idea? Would it wear out the tranny to do this?

It does not matter what gear you put it in, as long as its locked in and the motor is off, you wont go anywhere. This is assuming you have a healthy trans. And you should always use the e brake because you never know if something will snap internally.

Thats news to me. Never heard of that.
I have to leave my car in neutral as a part or "remote start shut down sequence" for my system to know that it can start without running into anything. I have to trust my e-brake. If I leave my car in gear, the remote start won't function (which is a good thing).
