When changing gears say from first, to second, to third, it doesn't really allow for a quick gear change, whereas if you drive say an Opel Astra (Holden Astra) or a Hyundai Accent, the gear change is very quick and smooth...
i think that is the syncro/mechanical linkage issue.
i believe most (at least the two you named) have cable shifters, which dont transfer the "feel" of the syncros.
you can tighten this up (eliminate slop, faster shifts) with a short shift kit.
